You might be able to get some ideas from my online glossary here:

http://billiards.colostate.edu/resources/glossary.pdf

It is 30 pages long and fairly comprehensive.
I don't see "Lagniappe" in your glossary. I mean, WHAT THE HAY, you being a New Orleanian and all.

Lagniappe as in negotiating for a better spot but you don't want to be specific (because the sky is the limit), so you ask your opponent to provide a little lagniappe to the spot.

Example: "Hey Dude! You know that game isn't fair. How about a little lagniappe?"

Pronounciation: Lan-Yap! (Lan as in AN)
That's cute, Joey. Thanks for sharing. I actually love that word, and heard it a lot growing up (mostly at the butcher shop).

Maybe I'll come up with a Louisiana-specific glossary some day; but for now, I think I want to stick to stuff that is used commonly in most regions (not just in the great state of Louisiana). :embarrassed2:

Dave

My next article for PoolDawg is going to be aimed at demystifying pool terminology for people who are new to the game (articles are located here.)

What do you think are some of the terms that confuse newbies?

Thanks for your help,

Salam ,
We get confused any way because we are newbies . We get more confused when we are older .
I started a thread which you may look at : A list of all the billiard's shot .

3 pages in and not one mention of "getting shape".

Getting shape.... or position.... or location

Cue ball ending up with excellent shape... "I like your location".

Cue ball on an extremely good safety... "I don't like the location".

Cinch or cinched - An easy shot, often without regards to position
In off - Pocketing a ball off another ball
Stitched - Same as snookered or hooked
Leaner - Same as hanger or a ball deep in the pocket

slight difference

Cinch or cinched - An easy shot, often without regards to position

I understand that ,"cinch ," used as a verb is what you do in a situation where you have (ie.) an 8 ball and a nine ball left. In order to get good shape on the nine you have a high risk of missing the eight. Thus you weigh the odds and choose to make ( cinch) the eight and take your chances with a difficult shot on the nine.

Your definition is correct but too broad a usage to really define the
pool hall specific meaning. :yeah:
