This is a poll thread.

Do you think a pool TV show like the Fats vs. Mosconi challange matches show they did in the 70 would help pool,

Poker shows piles of hundred dollar bills mounded up on the table at the end of the shows when they play heads up for 1st place in every tournment, all that cash laying there is there for a reason, ratings and to promote poker, they dont lay a million dollars on the golfcourse for Tiger to go pick up at the 18th hole-but they do in poker it makes the money seem real.

here is my idea: A pool match between 2 players with mics on talking to each other themselfs etc playing 8 ball-something the masses understand for alot of money, where the money is visiable like in poker, and making prop bets, like "i'll give you 5 to 1 you cant backwards cut that ball in" " Oh yeah" "Bet 10dimes" and then the players would post the bet before the shot. The format could be betting by the game race etc, side bets with the audience etc.

Good pool, not over the top trash talking so it seems fake and lots of cash being bet, to get people fired up to go play pool, instead of poker. I think with the right players and announcers it might be a good show, perhaps 1 episode every 3 months 4 a year. I have a friend who has done a big reality show the studio gave him a 23million dollar budget-he is the real deal, i'm gonna run this past him,

i need thoughts, ideas input, good or bad it wont hurt my feelings, the more ideas the better,

Sounds good to me. Use a player as the announcer so I wont have to turn the sound off like I usually do. Ha If not a player, then tie the announcer to his chair and turn his mic down.

I still like the idea of a low budget pool movie using players as the primary actors. There have been low budget movies that have made good money. There are just too many good real life stories not to be able to come up with an interesting script.

#1 -You MUST have players with a gift for gab for this to work.
You simply will not pull it off if one or both players can't talk while they play.

#2 - You have to flash the cash.

#3 - It can't appear fake. That means to either the true pool bums or the guys or gals who rarely step into a pool hall. You pull some Poolhall Junkies crap and everyone will see right through it.

#5 - One of the players at the table must be attractive.

#6 - Use the censoring "beep" instead of cutting out the foul language.
(but tell the players to keep it at a bare minimum)

#7 - If there will be other players in attendance, make flash visits to the "practice room" and show em doing what they do. Interview them. Get their opinions and picks. Get some emotion involved.

AWWW DUDE. I DIDN'T MEAN TO DO THE "THUMBS DOWN". I MUST'VE HIT IT BY MISTAKE.

Yes, but low budget often means bad acting / bad script.
Look at PHJ

I'm trying to figure out which top pros we could get to play challenge matches like this and be able to talk freely with the cash at risk.

Any ideas?

Ya know..this sounds like it might work....I like the idea of the woofn and side bets ect.

There is a simple solution to the "personality" issue.Stake Horses.

These guys would be regulars that appear every week and talk it up with each behind one player or the other. That would lend the show some "identity" as well as some continuity. These guys would know pool and have BIG personalities. That way when the players start woofn it'll just be a bonus.

Could be a fun show.If done right I'd have it in my tivo today.

There are never any guarantees. I can count on one hand the major movies with good scripts and good acting that hollywierd has produced over the past several years. I believe many players would be natural actors, given the nature of their profession.

A TV show or movie would, I expect, take the right amount of marketing know-how.

dont need pros, with editing and good players it will work, the DCC 10-ball ring game was chump change compaired to poker it was like 30K,

as for players, buck tooth and someone else colorful and piles of cash. was my first thought

Pagulayan
Daulton
McCready
Frost
Eric Durbin
Hennessee
Pickle

pick four and put em in a doubles matchup. That way, even when they aren't talking to their oponent, they'll be talking amongst themselves.

great idea

It's already in progress though.
I had this idea months ago and
have been working with a very successful
promoter to kick this off.
It's not exactly what you're talking about
but it's very close and I'm hoping it will
be a monthly event if not more frequent.
We're looking for sponsors and have a solid foundation
and a good venue to start with.
I'm not giving any details yet but
I'll let you all know when we're ready
to start promoting and recruiting players.
This won't be just for pros either.
cheers

I thought it was a great idea. #5 is very important to grap viewers. They could make a Scotch Doubles team. Allison Fisher and John Schmidt vs. Karen Corr and Rodney Morris alot of good match ups out there. Keith McCready and Vivian Villarreal what a team that would make. Both these players have a great gift for gab.

You Get The Picture

How about a pool TV show based on the similar premise of Hell's Kitchen (and Chef Ramsey) ?
Six aspiring men and six women have to become good enough to play in (and place 'in the money' in a Pro Open tournament )
The instructor would scream and holler and curse at them throughout their pool journey. For example:
"You shot the 3 BEFORE the 2 ball, WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO COUNT ?"
"You missed the white ball COMPLETELY, you moron."
"You not only can't MAKE a proper bridge, you can't even WALK OVER ONE."
"I said POT the ball, not PUTT the ball, you stupid ass."
"I said 'break cue', not for you to BREAK you cue. Are you CRAZY ?"
Doug
( are there any rabid instructors... with wild bulging eyes & unruly hair... besides BUDDY HALL ? :) )

If I’m not mistaken I believe the BCA trade show is this week in Vegas. That would be a good place to look for sponsor ship for the show.

And the two Instructors could be none other than Fast Larry and Earl Strickland (BTW Earl is one of my all-time favorite player, so this isnt a cut on him)

more ideas

There are some good ideas here, let's keep them coming.

What I am doing is not going to be televised right away
but will be a spectacular forum for generating regular salaries
for the top pros and ams. There will be plenty of money.
