Pool's "Best Practices"

I believe I said earlier in the thread, that I can not readily think of any other athletic endeavor where the motion is a pulling in to one's self other then when one is receiving something like a ball. But... when something is propelled it is from an extension of the arm.

I think I asked if anyone could come up with something but perhaps I just thought it & did not get to typing it out.

Anyway,
Best to All,
Rick

Well to be technically correct the only action muscles can do is contract and relax.

A muscle group cannot extend on its own, it happens when the opposite muscle group contracts to move a body part like your forearm.

Of course you can contract two opposing muscle groups at a time, like when do an Arnold front double bicep pose, after you get out of the shower.

(hope this does not turn into another push pull debate)

Muscles do not push or pull, they either contract or extend.

What you do with that muscle contraction/extension relationship is another matter.

Man Tony,

Now you've really messed it all up.

Now the only way we will figure it all out is to talk with our hands.

Best,
Rick

Not an exact match but...

When bowling, generally speaking, the whole arm is swung backward, then pulled forward, extending and then contracting the forearm, ( from behind the body, past the body) to propel the ball forward.

Yes, I consider bowling but the hand & ball are basically swung out away for the body & then after the ball is gone the hand comes to the body as the elbow bends.

I see that more as a result of putting the spin on the ball.

When I was young, I could not put that spin on the ball. So. I put what would be the spin of a left hand-er & my arm & hand did not come into my body but instead went straight up with the arm fully extended.

Thanks for the Thought & Best to You, Sir,
Rick

It doesnt even matter what the muscles do. It is the motion. Pushing is when you exert force on an object and the object moves away from you based on where you exerted the force.

Anyone who says the backstroke is not a pushing motion is wrong.

Archery is a pulling motion because you grab the bow in front of you and you pull it back... bending the arm.

This goes along with what a few of us have been saying.

But my reference was about propelling something.

That's why I said that the fingers 'extend' to loose the arrow.

If you think about it, it still goes along with what I was saying in that the string contracts to an angle of less than 180* & then extends to propel the arrow.

Best 2 You & All,
Rick

I wish somebody would figure out this push-pull thing... it's keeping some of us from joining a league. I understand that teammates will root someone on to play good, that is, they pull for them to win. But, I also understand that some get rather vocal about it, and push you to win. I don't like being pushed. So, are they pulling or pushing??

Could this actually be the unknown reason pool is failing today? Simply because people don't like to be pushed when playing?? Or is it that most pool players are of a free spirit type, and don't like to pulled into playing??

This push-pull thing might be bigger than we all dreamed it could be. :)

It is actually pushing me to consider getting out of the leagues I play because of all of the bad racks I have been getting to break, but the thought of quitting is pulling on my heartstrings to stay, mostly because I enjoy the night out with my team-mates.

I am being pushed and pulled in opposite directions.

I heard that in certain parts of Kentucky it is not considered a POOL league... they call it a push league. They are backwards there though.
