i am going to purchase a "Nelson" table made in the republic of panama for about $200. (4 1/2 X 9). the quality of slate is not that good but there are no other choices here. i have played on them for many hours and the slate has imperfections. (areas that are not perfectly flat). what cloth would you suggest to "smooth" out the bad areas? also, can i replace the rails with a better product or have to use the same bumper?

You might try a backed cloth which would be slower than any worsted and can mask some of the poor rolls. Are you asking about changing out the rails or just the cushions? If it's just cushions, you need to measure them to determine the size and then look at the alternatives available to you at your supplier.

you might try smoothing out the slate with bondo, alot of mechanics use it to fill the seams in slates, fill cracks etc.

I'm not a mech...but, you might want to ask a mech about blocking (honing) your slate. Worked great on my 1947 Centennial.

there is a post by Realkingcobra that show his block hone and it works taske a straight edge or soliod level spray glue sandpaper in the middle grit side facing out and glue two pieces grit side against the level or straight egde to control depth of sanding. this makes it so you only hit the high spots. then go over it with bondo fiberglass jellie dries clear and hard as glass.
