poor sportsmanship/etiquette

not helpful. In fact, poor advice throughout.

Do not change the table. Let someone else do it...there is no reason to do anything that might look like the game ended coz of your actions. YOu say thank you, smile and walk away (or sit right there).

Can't shoot the shot still is the reason you don't change the table. What if the ref comes over and your opponent says, 'I dunno what he was doing...?'
You then say 'I thought he surrendered', ref says ' you have to shoot it.'

WHat?! you raked the balls?! Guess who is left w/ the short end now?

Here's a helpful hint:

When somebody says that to you, quickly swipe the 8ball and cueball with your stick. and put the rack on the table.

This way they can't try and make you take the shot still. You gain the upper hand if an argument breaks out because you can't take the shot anymore.

I figure people play for lots of different reasons. One is to blow off steam from the day's pressure cooker. When they act rude my internal reaction is, "What is this guy's problem?" Whatever it is, it will not become my problem.

I have told people in the past to go blow off some steam before going home after work. Don't take your problems home to the wife and kids. Maybe that is what they are doing. Of course in league play it is after supper, but you get the idea.

So when I meet the nit wit, I just remember to not let his problem become my problem. If he is sufficiently obnoxious I won't play pool with him any more.

That's a pretty poor 'helpful hint' PocketPoint.

Here's the reality, to the OP. You stroked POORLY on the game ball. It doesn't matter whether you "had" to shoot it or not. Your mistake was not shooting well. BTW, a stun shot is a stop shot with an angle. It sounds, from your description, that you basically had a straight in shot, and the CB lost it's 'slide/skid' prior to striking the OB...causing the CB to be rolling when it hit the 8, and naturally rolling into the pocket afterwards.

Moral: ALWAYS give every shot 100% of your attention, whether you believe you have to shoot it, or not.

I should also mention that I know how and why I shot incorrectly. I just have a bit of a gripe about how the situation was handled after the fact. I intended on going about my business in good cheer, but others on my team and theirs did not. Again, to me, poor sportsmanship on display. This seems to be happening more and more in the pool league. I may have to consider a permanent exit from league play in my area.

Do NOT come to Arlington, Texas looking for good sportsmanship in pool leagues :(. Not much exists.

Is there another sport/game with as much constant bickering that pool has???

Another angle to consider is - wasn't it poor sportmanship on his part not to honor his concession? Had I conceded in that manner I would not have accepted the win. This could lead to a stalemate with neither side wanting to take the win.

Rules!

We don't get to pick and choose which rules we like or don't like. We either have to follow the rules of play or don't play by any rules.

The rule was clear. Your captain wanted to follow the rules and you didn't.

Many years ago I played in a National tournament where the rule was to patch the pocket where the 8-ball was going. Prior to the match start my opponent asked to not use the patch. Trusting me said, "sure" and boy was I dumb. Hill, hill. My shot on the 8-ball. Make it in the pocket and my opponent yells, "Foul, foul. You didn't patch the pocket." He then made sure that people that were close by saw that the patch was down by the coin chute. There was nothing I could do. I called for the ref and pled my case but knew I would lose...and I did.

Never again. Whether I like them or not, or my opponent likes them or not, I play hard...by the rules. :)
