Post your Billiard Related Stuff

I went up into my pool room and started looking at some of the things I've collected.

I realized the most ancient and antique thing in the room was ME!

Don't worry, I won't post a picture!

Well, I don't know if what I just bought is worth a little or a lot.

I saw this on ebay in an out of the way place and grabbed it.

It's a print and I have been searching for about an hour and can't find either of these images anywhere.

One guy is Maurice Vignaux and the other guy is Jacob Schaefer

It has their names under the images along with "billiard tournament at chicago nov.15 1887".

Well, I emailed Deno Andrews, thinking if anyone would know about this print, he would.

He was kind enough to return my mail and told me that these images were in a Harper's Weekly in 1887. The images in the paper were black/white of course but someone put color to the images and made a print or else a print was made from a painting.

I'll know more when I actually receive it.

I still can't believe the knowledge that Deno Andrews possesses.

Thanks Deno.........

Very Nice item Jeff, the inner print look a like the Cigarette cards from the same time period. If it is an original(date to the actual time period it) it most likely is a souvenir from an actual match.

If this is this case it could be worth a few thousand dollars.

Last of all the frame looks original, at least in the photo.

Is the glass in the frame slightly blurred when a light is applied to it, I ask this because most of the glass used at that time was not Crystal Clear due to impurities in the refining process. Sometimes glass from this period would also have a slight purple cast due magnesium that was mixed with the Silica Sands where it was mined.

Uh, where is this bar at and what kind of alarm system do you have.

:D :D :D
the alarm and closed circuit camera system is state of the art.the 2 highly trained guard dogs are the best. IF you survive that the international assassin Manwon with his two 45's will put an end to any adventure a person may partake in !!!

Well, I got ahold of a picture of the actual page from the 1887 Harper's Weekly

Here is the page that appeared in the paper:

Vignaux.jpg

And here is the item I bought:

I haven't received it yet so I don't know who the artist is. I suspect it is the same person that did the art for the paper but he made a etching and made the one I bought.

They are very similar but there is a definite difference in the background and other things.

I just wonder what I really have?

Well, an update

I got ahold of a guy with the actual issue of the Harper's weekly that the above picture came from and he is selling me the whole issue.

So I will have the Harper's picture AND the etching/print. :) :)

Plus I just bought two other items.......and I think I got a couple of good deals.

First is an old Willie Hoppe ad from 1947

http://cgi.ebay.com/1947-Gillette-Willie-Hoppe-Billiards-Champion-Ad_W0QQitemZ220076322067QQihZ012QQ

Second is a another issue of Harper's Weekly with pictures/article of Michael Phelan, Pierre Carme, Dudley Kavanagh, and John Roberts from 1866.

http://cgi.ebay.com/2-Harpers-Weekl...ENIAN-LEADERS_W0QQitemZ230082850372QQihZ013QQ

I got the framed print today.

But how do I find out information on it?

I took the back off the frame and the back of the print is plain.

The front bottom of the frame under the print has "The Billiard Tournament at Chicago Nov. 15, 1885"

On the print itself, at the upper right it has, "November 28, 1885"

Under the right picture it has, "Maurice Vignaux executing a "three cushion draw"."

Under the left picture it has, "Jacob Schaefer about to execute a Masse' shot"

Maybe the Harper's Weekly paper will have the artists name? Haven't got it yet though.
