Potential SouthWest Copy

Hello everyone..

First off, Im new to the forum so HELLO!!

I began playing at the Boys & Girls club and played from the ages 6 until I was about 9. I used to sit there and play consistently every day (M-F) after school until my mother picked me up. I didn't get the chance to play to often after attending the B&G club, but whenever I got the chance I surely enjoyed shooting. I'm currently 21 and just recently got into a league in Southern California. Our first season we ended up placing at Tournament of Champions and I'm looking forward to going to regionals!! I'm currently a SL-5.

Anyways, I have been playing with a team-members cue for the past 2 seasons. It was a nice (but cheap) cue and although I enjoyed playing with it I really wanted to get a cue of my own..
I decided to give my moms old friend a call, the person who originally got me into pool. He used to play a lot when I was younger, and I knew he always had a couple nice cues on hand.
He mentioned to me that he has a cue I can HAVE. I was exstatic to say the least, but very curious to see what he had for me!!

After about 2-3 months of playing phone tag and before getting the chance to meet up, I decided to ask him if the cue happened to have a name (company). He mentioned he got the cue in Las Vegas between the years 1990 and 2000 (He doesn't remember) at a tournament. He isn't very big on ''hyping'' any of his belongings, regardless of how good they are, but I do know he likes QUALITY things and doesn't really like to go the ''cheap'' route, so to speak. I thought he mentioned it was a SOUTHWEST cue, and at the time I had no idea what that was. So I hopped online to check it out, and to my surprise everything I saw ranged from $1500-$4000 !!

Fast forward a little bit, and I finally get the chance to meet up with this very generous person and he gifts me my new cue (and really nice case, too!). It is honestly everything I had wanted in a cue, simple, but classy & beautiful !! I asked another question along the lines of it being a Southwest, considering the research I had done prior put me in near disbelief, or shock more-so. From what I understood, he mentioned it may be a "Southwest Copy". He told me he owns a "Jerry Franklin era Southwest" and that my cue would be very difficult to determine if its authentic or not because there are no stamps/serial codes etc on either of the two (his or the one he gifted).

He mentioned to me that he has NEVER parted nor sold ANY of his cues out of his collection, and the one I received was his very first one. Personally, I think he gave me one of the nicer cues he had just because of his complete generosity and kindness. I am completely blown away and I have been in complete awe ever since I received it (Less then a week ago).

I'm beginning to ramble a bit but I was wondering if anybody has any information that may help me figure out my curiosity.

I don't really care to much if its real or not (although that would be absolutely AWESOME!!) because the value of the cue is PRICELESS to me. It shoots absolutely AMAZING (i had no idea what a GOOD cue really felt like) and its my first pool cue as an adult so it'll hang around forever.

Thanks for reading

Don't even try to find out if it's real or not; treat it like it is and it will take you far.

angldemn,
you know what, I'm taking that advice and running with it!! +rep

The monetary value is meaningless to you...
..I have a feeling you'll never let it go.

But it would still be nice to know.
If your league travels take you near a reputable dealer...
..have it appraised.

Sometimes hard to tell from a faraway pic like this, but it doesn't appear to be an authentic SW cue. Never seen them do rings like that around the wrap section and the bumper is all wrong. It's a nice looking old SW-knock off. Possible that it's a Mohawk cue....they were doing similar SW copies around 15-20 years ago.

Could be right....and I've played with some great Mohawks.

I'm no expert but that doesn't look like the bumpers typically used on SW cues. Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in.

(is there a cactus on the pin? Not sure how long they have been doing that)

It does not look authentic. The ringwork, the bumber and rigns around the wrao do not look correct. SW did make a similar cur which they call their "Satin Finish Cue". Their Satin Finish Cue also does not look like the one you have pictured.

Its a true southwest, discussion closed :D

In all honesty, it would be nice to know, but after reading angldemn response, I'm not sure I even want to know!!

The bumper I noticed was different then all the SW cues i've come across, and someone also mentioned the rings around the wrap.

I'm not sure if this is typical or not, but the wrap is 'pressed' on there. (The fabric wont fray)

The finish on this cue is absolutely flawless, smooth as a babys bottom. Looks like glass when looking down the sight.

I took some more photos in case I caught anyone elses curiosity

Hello everyone..

First off, Im new to the forum so HELLO!!

First I would like to welcome you to the forum!!! :)

The cue pictured is very difficult to identify by the single photo you have offered. I would recommend that you post photo's of the cue that clearly show the cues detail of the bumper removed.

A photo of the cue with the bumper removed will show for certain.

Hope this helps.

Thanks PT! I love the looks of the cue, simple but beautiful. She shoots really, really nicely. I've never had a cue of my own, but in all honesty, she shoots much nicer then anything I've ever used in the past, in my opinion/preference anyway.

The big guy is my dog Brutus.. Brutus the Bulldozer. I got him as a rescue when he was about 11 months old. He had been kenneled his entire life, had his ears cut off, nasty teeth, the mange, etc. etc. etc. When I first got him he would submissively urinate himself every time I would come to him and show him any attention. He is almost 3 now, and he is one of the friendliest, needy, loving & affectionate dog I've ever met. He gets along great with my other male pitbull Angus, as well as my 15 year old cat Binx. On a side note, he has tons of game and is great at hunting. I often take him to the local highschool to chase rabits for exercise, unfortunately hes getting a little to good at what he does, so I might have to start taking him out on the longboard again. :P

Anyways, I am near 100% positive that my cue is not authentic SouthWest after further research and somebody who knows a ton about authentics was nice enough to send me a private message confirming. I am not upset about this fact, as I mentioned before the cue is priceless to me. If the cue was nice enough to be in the collection of the person who was nice enough to gift it to me, it surely is plenty nice enough for me to use! Not to mention I absolutely love it and I can only express my appreciation by holding onto it forever!

Thanks for the responses everybody

Thanks for the welcome! - I actually posted more pictures just before you responded, so if you'd like to take a look please do!

Although I am almost certain with the help here that my cue is not an authentic SouthWest, here is a picture of the bumper removed.

Also, a question for everybody, what is the pros/cons of a metal:wood joint compared to metal:metal. Besides the fact I get nervous when screwing it in :D

Beautiful cue!! I've already determined its not, but i've had a couple local respectable pool players tell me how nice of a copy it truly is.. (and they said they've NEVER had the nerve to say that in the past)

Anyways, I love the cue!! so thats good enough for me

I'm only 22 at the moment (just turned, actually) but i've been thinking about putting an order in for a Southwest, that way when I've got a career+stable I can go ahead and cough up the change for one. I'll be using my current cue until then :)

I wouldn't call it a SW copy, more like a SW tribute or SW style cue. It's obviously got SW style rings but that's about where the similarities end. It doesn't look to me that whoever built it did so to intentionally dupe anyone which is what a SW copy infers.
Also most SW copies are low end overseas cues whereas many quality cue builders have made SW style cues.
