I've only ever seen three versions of a Predator 314 shaft.

First shaft had "314" a.k.a. Pre-Cat
Second shaft had "314" and the cat below a.k.a. 314^1

Third shaft has "314^2"

Even further back than the 314 with and without the cat, the shafts had no logo and a long ferrule. A lot of people like the original 314s the best and even more so with the very first ones. I had a 96 model with the long ferrule and no logo on the shaft and it was a really nice hitting cue, wish I still had that one...

Yeah, I just picked up a few of those very older pre-cats. both have the 1" ferrule. The
one with the 10 piece lamination has the 314 on wood by the collar. The other has a
12 piece lamination and has no logo at all on it. I hear that they also dabbled with a 6
piece lamination, and there are a few of those around too. I believe that with the 314-1
shafts ( 314 and cat logo ) were the first to be made overseas, but I'm not positive about
that. I also have a buddy that has a predator butt with just a 314 above the wrap. I was
wondering if anyone had any info. about those cues. If someone has some info. on those
butts, I'd like to hear it. I have another thread here in the main forums started about it.

I have a Cat, but the Cat Logo is upside down.

I bought it used, from Rossaroni, if I remember. So, a factory boo boo, a Partial that a maker did for someone and put the logo upside wrong, or something else. I don't know.

No fancy ring work on it so if it was a partial, it wasn't to match a custom cues rings.

And the fact that I have an upside down Cat doesn't even matter much. Just wanted to tell you guys.

What's the difference from the 314-1 and 314-2?

Nothing. KJ Simpson, (KJ Cues) is a Pred repairman and does all of Seyberts work. He has been asked that question 100s of times and he gives the same answer every time.

I believe that I even PMed him once and that was the answer that I got.

And this is something that I don't know or can't remember. One or the other. Did Pred always have 10 laminations or did they originally have 8 and then 10. Or did they ever have 8 at all.

Howdy,

Terry has got it almost right but not quite.
What I said was that there is no difference btwn the 'cat' and 'pre-cat' Gen1 shafts other than the decal.
I've listened to the argument since I've been on AZ and some people persist in perpetuating a myth.
There is no difference in the construction or anything else.
Predator changed decal design mid-run and that's all. Kinda like the 'flag/pre-flag thing.

Now the Gen2 is a different story.
While the wood and it's radial-pie construction remains the same, everything else about the shaft was changed.
Tip, ferrule, tenon design and the use of phenolic at the joint-end are basically what makes the Gen2 different.
Even then it's the same shaft just with different features.

PS. To the number of pie splices mentioned.
Predator started with a 1-pc shaft. From there they went to a 6, then 12 and settled on 10 where it's been ever since.
They never offered an 8 splice.

HTHs, KJ

I think they are made the same way. The 314-2 has a different ferrule; one that does not stain and maybe it's even lighter for more low-deflection characteristics. I believe the taper is a little different between the two generations as well.

The 314-2 also has a phenolic joint and insert.

Thanks KJ, I knew you would see this one.

Well, I had the 2 words, "no difference" right. Just not the shafts that had no difference. Haha.
