And I can show you about 100 videos with them playing for fairly decent money (at the time) on absolute buckets, and they still brushed the rail unnecessarily.

Now you are going back to the "70's" and earlier. Lassiter,Mosconi era, ..... and yes I will agree they rubbed the rail a time or two.
That vid I linked I happened to watch, and Sigel "rubbed" the rail once out of 150 times. I would take those odds for my playing ability anyday.
