Premier League Pool (PLP) 6-13 March2023, Leicester- Earl makes his debut !

Nice to hear Imran Mahid commentating. He is possibly the best commentator on Eurotour events and is one of the most elite commentators in the game. Matchroom seems to have a near monopoly on the good commentators.

Professional golf as well. The European commentators are far superior to the vocabulary limited Americans. Americans can not make a comment anymore without using ‘awesome’ and ‘cool’. It the only superlative they know. We’ve lost the ability to speak the Kings English. It’s a reflection of the diminished public school system.

Unfortunately I have to listen to Jeremy Jones who can’t keep his mouth shut and has to tell us how much he knows about how to play every shot before players get down over the cue ball. That’s when I hit the mute button.

Let's get David Feherty in the booth!

Half way through the first round robin:

How do you guys thing MR is making money on this event? No in-person ticket sales. USA viewers are free on Youtube. USA youtube advertisements are pool brands, which probably means lower price point ad fees than major brands (this is my assumption).

The 10 players who made it to the second stage last year ranged from 13 wins to 6 wins. One player who didn't make it through also had 6 wins (perhaps the tie breaker was their head-to-head result, but I am not sure as total games won might also be a reasonable tie breaker).

This year may be tougher and need more. cos at half way mark after morning session today (after 60 matches), need 4 points for top 10. Double that is 8 points.
So 7 points may not be enough :D

Cost
Prizemoney $100K
16 Players expenses (travel, hotel, food etc) $100K
MR production plus misc $150K (lower than major events)
I am guessing ballpark $350K

Revenue
-No gate money
-Youtube is peanut money. I see on average 100K views per session. 2 sessions per table per day. 8 days on 2 tables is 32 sessions. About 3M views. Probably low 5 figures in Youtube ad money. They could generate some more views (not much) by creating more content, vids with highlights, interviews, etc.
-sponsors (won't be much I am guessing less than 6 figures)

-Their main revenue source for this event has to be broadcast revenue from broadcasters. They will need probably $250K broadcast revenue to break even
Good thing about this event is they generate tonnes of content more than any other MR event. 183 matches over 8 days. About 20 hours per day (on 2 tables) is 160 hours. If they can collect total $1.6K broadcast fees for each hour they could break even :)

Seo beats Albin 5-3.

She play's like the 90's women with a locked elbow. I haven't seen that in a while. Siming and Kristina and the Filipino women copied the men's strokes, and drop their elbows a mile.

I can't figure out what Seo was playing in this clip. I was watching live, and just from the way she was lining up it didn't make any sense. Then when she shot it, it made even less sense. What are your thoughts? What was she playing? How would you have played it?

I think she was trying to just kill it for the corner and badly misjudged the speed, or just pounded the ball on accident. If not then she was trying to play two rails out for the side and under hit it pretty badly. I was curious about that shot too

Could be a situation where she pondered both options and didn't fully commit to either in her mind, and got a halfway result because of it.

What makes a good pool commentator? I did not get to hear much of Imran but what does he do that makes him top tier commentator in our sports?
A good commentator should a) have an upbeat style that shows genuine enthusiasm for the proceedings, b) offer well-judged analysis of the positions, and c) communicate with clarity and fluidity.

Imran is not as good an analyst as either Lely or Jones, but he's nearly as good in evaluating the positions. He has a nice voice for commentary and good communication skills. He doesn't go off on many tangents, either, which is a plus. Although Imran doesn't quite bring the level of enthusiasm that Boyes does, Imran has a genuine enthusiasm for the matches that you can sense as a listener, and it shines through.

Imran's one of the best. Matchroom's commentary lineup that includes Lely, Jones and Majid may just be its best ever.

I'm think they need or want this content for Matchroom Live.
