I assume the ref
What was the game score when the foul was called? I assume the ref made the call after he broke? Seems strange, as all the matches I’ve seen the ref is standing behind the player on the break shot, which would make it hard for the ref to determine if the cue ball was sitting on or just over the headstring, unless it was clearly over the headstring to the extent that the ref could see the headstring line behind the cue ball?

The setting for this tournament makes it hard to watch. It looks like they are playing in a mortuary with this color scheme and furniture. It's quiet as a church with no spectators. Boring jmo.

Cutting it close but yes, clearly behind/on the headstring, which is based on the base of the ball and where it is touching the cloth.
What's weird is they stopped filming the rest of the match? They cut the feed to a dart advertisement for the rest of the set.
I went back and watched and maybe Sanjin was over the box line instead of the headstring - really hard to see how it was different from his other breaks during the set. Maybe it was clearer to the ref at the table. I didn't see a feather or double hit. Sanjin seemed to keep his cool; understandable he'd want to discuss the call with the ref at least.
Imagine if Mika got hit with this call.

From the angle his cue shaft is pointing, he was clearly inside the center box on both accounts. Perhaps the referee was just making a point because it was so close to being on both lines.

we see it from a top camera that's centered on the middle of the table, not the headstring, with anti-fisheye tech (don't know the correct terminology) that slightly distorts the angle. so what we get from the top camera may not be conclusive
Agree completely. I almost think MR should not hold events without fans in attendance.

This is very true. I see it all the time on my home pool table that has an overhead camera in the middle.
That said, the CB looked inside by a mile on "this" overhead view. Either the camera really did distort it that much, or the ref is blind. I think the only way to know for sure is to place a ball "on this table" with its center exactly on the headspring, and see what it looks like on "this" camera.
Agreed, winning only 2 of 5 matches today leaves SVB in a spot where he likely needs to run the table on his 4 matches tomorrow, and then hope a few others above him falter.
Skyler is in just slightly better shape, but still likely needs to win at least 4 of his 5 matches tomorrow to advance.
It’s certainly surprisingly the extent that Albin and Shane have struggled in this event, although Shane has never liked short race formats.
I haven't watched all of his matches but he really seems to be struggling on the break. Against FSR it think it was (didn't write it down) dry break, then made a ball but lost control of cue, golden break, dry break.
Seemed like he tried to back off the power and then came up dry or amped up the power and lost control of whitey. For him, the break is usually a big advantage and if he doesn't have it working, he's constantly having to turn the tide. With Shaw and FSR both playing good safeties and not making errors, he was put in a position where he had to force things and then it got ugly several times. And then he made some mental mistakes as well.
