Pro Rivalries

As for Corey and Mika, I thought they were great friends. I saw a video of them hanging out with hot girls playing strip pool, they looked like they were having a blast.

For those of you who don't think much of Mika's game, let me tell you that when he is in stroke, he is in the top 5 9ball players in the world. You really have to watch him play alot to know this, but his is a top-tier player. Same with Corey.

I think what he meant to say was... They like to play on the "same" team.
Meaning, they prefer the companionship of another woman. Which, if that is the case it is really none of our business.

Nor does it have anything to do with the topic at hand.

The women in pool are no different than the women in your office. Think about how well (or badly) the women in your office (or any other group setting of women) get along. Women in general tend to be catty and have difficulties getting along with each other. On the flip side, there are plenty of women that get along. Men tend to get along with each other better than women do.

Thanks for releasing the cat out of the bag Timberly

Thanks, Timberly, for your explanation. It makes perfect sense. Most appreciative :)

Well, whether it is or is not "really none of our business" is a different consideration altogether. For my part, I try to understand people and the way they are. There can be many different approaches to life, and if I'm able to glean something that will help me interact better with approximately 50% of the population, that's great.

As in office politics, in pool, the reason for dislike is usually professional jealousy, IME.

it seems that from many of my accustats from the 80 and 90's, many players have this thing about sigel. the funniest part to me is, you hear guys swear that sigel gets more rolls than anyone else (or used to). now, maybe this is a whole thread in itself, but sigel DID NOT get more rolls. if a good player ever tells me that another good player seems to roll lucky everytime against him, i just think highly of that player that supposedly got "lucky." mind you, im talking about people that have played over long periods here.

these guys are smart, i mean guys like sigel know that if you gamble on a 1 ball shot vs gamble on a 7 ball shot, the odds of getting safe on the one ball shot are like 3 or 4 times better. people dont look at it this way, and thats why they think there are lucky players, but its just not true in the long run, and for sure isnt true in sigel's case.

I run into thid sll the time..

A lot of the times I will purposely go for two way and three way shots so that I know if I miss I will leave him bad and if I make it I will still have shape. When you do miss on those shots a lot of people think that the safe was a lucky roll.

I got a chance to talk to Jose Parica one time. I asked him if he'd ever matched up with Efren. He told me that he gets really tired of always being compared to Efren but more than that, he gets upset when Efren gets credit for things that Jose has done. Evidently this has happened quite a bit.

I just think Jose would like to get some recognition for all the things he's done in pool. Unfortunately, like many of the pool players that Freddy, Jay and Grady have talked about in the Ronnie thread, many of his accomplishments were from gambling and the only way players like that get recognition is from the stories that people are willing to share. I wish we could find a way to better recognize some of these great players.

I had heard that Efren and Parica had blood between them and didn't like each other. Then I saw them together at a tournament and they were talking to each other for about 1/2 an hour and laughing and seeming to really be enjoying each others company. I think because Jose has upsets about the comparisons that some people think they don't like each other but it sure didn't appear to be true. (Jose ended up beating Efren in the finals of the tournament).

Amen, Sister Linda! Sad, but so very true. Fortunately, there's a few good apples in the barrel, and you are like a ray of sunshine in today's pool world. I'm so very happy to have met you in person and look forward to seeing you on the tournament trail.

Ain't it the truth! :p One thing I learned many years ago is that the HARDEST thing to accomplish in any job is NOT doing the actual work, but dealing with the variety of personalities.

the one thing that i have to add to this efren jose thing is, on the about 4 or 5 occasions that i have seen a big crew of philipinos roll through my area (efren luat andam...), parica was never with them, or at least it seemed that way. that has to mean something.

What i think it means is:

#1- Jose is US based and therefore not part of the 'travel group' with the rest of them.

#2-Jose has huge ego and doesn't want anyone stealing his rightful limelight. (What the hell is limelight btw?)

JMHO

An interesting point

At one of the big tournaments, I think it was the DCC last year, Efren listed his idol in pool as Jose Parica. Jose came to the US before Efren I believe.

Thank you, JAM. Likewise, I love to read your posts and can't think of a better ambassador or SWEATOR for the sport. Can't wait to see Keith take on the IPT!

I know women focus on the personality aspect more than the guys. Many times, pool may be the only sport/interest that they excel at, and therefore, they receive all their validation from what they get out of pool. I know I have encountered some jealousy and bad-mouthing, but I think it reflects more upon them, than on me.

I remember at a pro tournament, held just after Amateur Nationals, where my roomie, Kimberly Kirk had just won her 3rd AN title, we had to fill out a bio. I saw KK fill out hers...Amateur National Champion, 1997, Amateur National Champion, 1998, Amateur National Champion, 1999 (Dates are probably incorrect) and I looked over at my blank piece of paper and wrote, "I can beat Kimberly!" ROFL.

One of my favorite lines is, "I'm not a champion, but I sleep with them!". The humor being that I roomed with Kimberly and Jeanette at different times, and of course, my husband.

Anyway, guys seem to say F*** you, then get on with their lives, whereas women tend to do the backbiting and hold onto the grudge thing. :o
