Projection Systems

I'm trying to decide on a projector based training system and would love to hear from anyone with experience with both the Projection Pro and ICA Training systems. Ultimately I would prefer a system that incorporates augmented reality like IQ Billiards, but those appear to be a little out of my price range.

Are either of these preferable over the other, beyond pricing? I'm looking primarily to improve my game (consider myself a mid-level player), and wondering if anyone who has used both sees any significant difference between them.

This is so specialized I doubt there is anyone who has purchased both.

Here is my thread about the projection pro system if you'd like to see my install:

That could well be the best home projection pool practice system in existence. Are there particular parts of working on your game that you find it most helpful for? Do you still use it regularly?

I have projection pro billiards. I love it.

The ICA system I would consider a better system but not worth the extra money. The extra downloads they offer are nice, but again, outrageously expensive.

At the end of the day all the bells and whistles don't actually matter. If your job is to create layouts all day, ICA system is best. It's quicker with fancier options. But once you've loaded your custom drills, you won't really be making more layouts after that. You will just be looking at the location markers for the balls for each drill, just replacing sticker donuts for projected light at the end of the day.

i have the ICA and strongly recommend it
there are drills for every level and you can create your own drills and save them
the modules that you can purchase are tremendous and to me worth every penny.
also new modules are created all the time

I have the ica system, and it collects dust, would rather use little white donut stickers. Though I was gonna love the ICA system. If you have to much lighting in the room you are gonna use it in, it won’t show up good on the table.

I’m sure other people love it but not my cup of tea.

Thanks.

I actually had a software hiccup a few months ago. They sent me a new downlad via email, but I haven't installed it yet. So its been down a few months. The system is supposed to update automatically, and normally this is not needed. But the hiccup I had prevented the automatic update. I need to get back on it.

It was super helpful. I probably used it a year solid before getting lazy. I didn't use any of the built in drills. I liked breaking a 9 ball rack, and marking the layout. Then repeating that rack dozens of times. I did that for a bunch of racks. It allowed me to figure out the best patterns for each rack. I'd also go back to a saved rack months later, and I remembered the pattern that worked best even after not touching that rack a few months. The repetition also came up in real "ghost" sessions. There were many times I recognized a shot or layout from my saved layouts.

My next practice plan is all the straight pool end patterns from Tom Collins someone uploaded in the 14-1 section years ago. I think if I practice the end patterns I might be able to do better in straight pool. I want to put them in the system.

I'd say the system is equivalent to using doughnuts, once the doughnuts are where you want them. Except, it takes 2 seconds to switch to another layout, and you can return to any layout at any time in the future. With doughnuts that's not possible.

I do recommend. But its only for pool nuts like us on this forum. I can't imagine a banger having any interest.

What I am hoping is that one of these systems can help me to improve things like stun angles, angles off the rails, and positioning to target areas. Kind of hard to do those things with reinforcement labels ;) I've also often wanted to "save" layouts after a break and try different routes, but again, to much of a hassle with the doughnuts.

Unfortunately, all I could fit in my house was a 7' table, so I'm also wondering if these packaged drills are even worth trying on a small table...

you really dont need a projections system ..

Did you buy a projector that they recommended, or get one on your own?

Bought the one the suggested, I believe it is called “infocus”. My table is in a big pole barn with led ceiling lights. Also the table led lights, so when the projector is on its kinda visible. If I turn off the ceiling lights in the barn and only use the table light it shows up a little better.

I have the Projection Pro system. I think it is a powerful training tool. I just need to get on and use it more. There are a lot of things you can do with just the grid projected on your table. I haven't use the ICA system.

I have the PPB as well. The technology is basically the same between PPB and ICA, and I understand PPB developed it. ICA has more a la carte options, whereas PPB has it all rolled in for free. But, the display on the table is pretty much the same. It's a rectangle [original] projected onto a parallelogram
. I use mine at least once a week, but only to set up shots. I can't shoot with the really bright projector shining. It's distracting.

I suggest calling both and asking questions and then making a choice.

I have the ICA system and love it. If you're just using it like you would use donuts you'd be missing the point. There are some great specialized drills - such as the safety drills. It's been an immense help to me. :)

Interested in selling it?

I have no idea how much they are, but Trent From Toledo has a system... send him a message here on AZ, or "8 On The Break" on Facebook.

Talk to Thorsten Holmann. He is the house pro at Amsterdam Billiards and I often see him teaching with a projector system.
