Proposition shot

I was at a tournament the other night and this drunk dude sets up this prop shot and starts hassling the pool players saying they can't make this shot. He has a $20 bill centered longways over the foot spot, an object ball in the middle of the 20, and a quarter balanced on the object ball. He says "If you can knock the quarter off the bill, it's yours, and it's $5 a shot at it. Noone would pay much attention or bite on it, and I was in a match at the time. Anyone seen this shot and know how to make it? Doesn't look that hard to me.

sounds like the quarter isnt on the bill to begin with in order to be knocked off the bill, it gets knocked off the ball and would probably get ricochet off the cue ball and never even touch the bill...

Hit is with a slight jump shot the impact will make the quarter shoot up instead of down. I reccomend practicing it a few times before you make the bet.

Good Luck,
Darin

My guess would be that if you can jump the cue ball and make it hit the quarter, you can probably knock it off. The only problem is that even if you knock it off, you only win "it", whatever that is. For 5 bucks a pop, I'd better not be trying to win a stinkin' quarter. LOL.

I just got done attempting it and also found that a jump shot is the way to go. Easily done if you don't have to pocket the OB ball.

exactly what I thought when I read the post - knock the quarter off the bill and it's yours (the quarter), and it only costs you $5....lol

I'll take that bet all day long. Jump shot ftw.....

The much harder bet is to put a bill left to right on the center diamond against the rail furthest from the rack and have someone lag the cueball down table, they land on the bill they win anywhere else they lose.

If the jump is not allowed you can hit the ball softly enough so that the quarter just rolls off the top of the object ball instead of falling straight down (that is the actual shot by the way). If he would agree to let me do the shot as many times as I want until he was busted I would shoot the jump shot. If not hes just going to pull up after you make the first one.

That's an old carney game. 90%+ of the people will find that when you hit the ob, the quarter either drops straight down onto the bill, or if hit softly, the quarter will still remain on the bill. It can be done, but not with consistency. You will never do it hitting hard if the quarter is balanced right on top. If you get to put the quarter up there, angle it slightly towards the down side of the ball.

Yup, I used to see a similar shot at the local Fair every year.

Like others have said, you are betting $5 to win $0.25, and he will take as much action as you can stand.

He did specify that hte $20 was the prize, and only said no kicking at it. He did not say you had to pocket the ball. I was thinking jump, or cut the ball slow to one side to roll the quarter off the bill. Wish I had a table here to try it.

So you would post 50K to win $2.5K, if you never miss? Did I play you on Party Poker?

Actually I figured I just had to Post 5 at a time because its 5 a shot and that 5 will stay there for the entirety of the bet because its pretty much unmissable unless I die from exhaustion. It would just be giving him 25-1 odds on a 0% bet

there are two ways that i know of to do it. i'm surprised that nobody in the hall took him up on the offer.

#1. hit down hard on the cue and jump it into the object ball with the quarter on top. it will send the quarter flying to another table.

#2. this is harder but works; very slowly roll the cue into the object ball with the quarter on top. the object ball will roll and the quarter will roll with it. because he has the twenty lengthwise you could feather it on the side slowly rather than hit it slowly straight on. but the jump is easy....

ya, if i won only a .25, i would be pi$$ed and probably wouldn't play again. likely to tune him up as well... don't mind loosing a clever hustle here an there but this sounds like a bull$hit.

Proposition bet

If a stranger walks up to you and is willing to wager twenty dollars the jack of diamonds will float out of a pack of sealed cards and piss cider in your ear, do not accept the proposition - for as sure as you do...... you will recieve an ear full of cider.

Damon Runyon - (as best as my poor memory serves)

BTW -

It easy to perform a jump shot and knock the quarter off the dollar. It's also easy for the drunk to get mad - wager say five hundred - and while you are hitting the ATM - somebody is licking thier thumb to wet your cue tip......

At no time do the fingers leave the hands... step right up....

Nothing is ever easy.....

Or free....
