Hello all:

Big night and next few days ahead.

Tonight, I'm in an 8-ball playoff match. Hope mine is an early one as I'll be on the road by 5 am.

My eldest son is graduating Harvard with his Masters tomorrow morning. Whooohooo! What a fine young man he is.

Next, a buddy tells me there is a real nice upscale billiard club somewhere in Boston proper but he couldn't recall the name. Not looking for any action this trip nor am I looking for any seedy joints due to with whom I'm travelling. I will be up there a couple of days and am looking forward to some R&R. ;)

Any suggestions or perhaps anyone know the upscale joint? He said it was three stories with the middle floor having the tables.

I can only imagine how exciting the speech will be from Supreme Court Justice, David Souter. :boring2: Anybody know his speed? :)

TIA.

Best,
Brian kc

The multi level one is Jillians, close to Fenway Park. Have not been there in years though. There is also a Boston Billiards a couple of blocks away as well, so you have your pick. Boston Billiards tends to have more players, but they both are pretty much filled with college kids. Boston Billiards wins in waitress hotness if that's a factor for you :-) About an hour drive away NE you have Country Club USA either in or near Chelsford, which keeps having rumors about it closing, but I think it's still open. That is the best room of the 3.

I think also an hour N in Clinton, there is a nice quiet bar/pool room called Breakaway Billiards. Has nice tables with tight pockets, good cloth. Free pool on Tue, Wed and Th. I play there at times. I have seen only a few players there above a C though most of the time but it's a less annoying place to play than Jillians or Boston Billiards.

If you have the patience to travel, the room I play in RI has all day/night specials that are cheaper than 1 hour of play at the other places. CC USA also has a weekend day special. Assuming you have a car while here.

Boston Billiards near Fenway is closed. Jillian's is the only pool hall in Boston that I guess you could call upscale, but it's not because of the state of the equipment or the quality of the players, just to warn you. Don't worry about action, because you won't find any there. It's a nice place to go with people that aren't that serious about pool. If you did want action or to see a 'real' pool hall, you'd have to head to World Class in Peabody, MA or Snookers in Providence, RI.

Brian I can't help you with the Pool Room, but I certainly understand your pride concerning you son's accomplishment, that is certainly wonderful Man.

Congratulations Brian!~

Congrats!

Here's the web site for the local Jillian's:

If you want to play 3-cushion then the place to go is World Class in Peabody. That'd take you about 30 minutes from Harvard Square.

There's a 12' snooker table at The Billiards Cafe in Ayer, but that'd be a 45-minute drive for you.

Flattop Johnny's may be the closest to Harvard, but you might get annoyed at how slow the cloth is (assuming they haven't replaced it).

You can find other pool halls using the list at Boston Pool Halls, but be forewarned that some of the pool halls on it (e.g. Renaissance, Sacco's in Somerville) have closed recently. Call ahead!

If you're in Harvard Square and want to drink a beer while you think about pool, then John Harvard's is worth a visit.

Kickin', I apologize for not showing up sooner but there's been this big-ass brouhaha going on about God and aiming systems and I'm only just now getting around to offering my congratulations to your son for his most worthwhile achievement. Buy yourself a drink on us for helping him out to.

Thanks!

Thanks very much for the kind words & Boston suggestions. Almost everything went great...

Rather than boring details, here's the bulleted version (some still may find boring):

Wednesday night, played 8-ball playoff match, got home after midnight knowing I had to leave no later than 5 am for graduation ceremonies.

Finished packing, went to bed, did obligatory self-critique of pool match in my head which didn't allow me get to sleep until approx 2 am.

Was awakened approx 2:15 am (yes, just 15 min after falling to sleep) by arrival of intense storm - it was incredibly windy and actually started hailing (small pea sized). Got up, went to a window at the front of my house just in time to witness a fireball with LOUD explosion in the middle of the yard, maybe 50 feet off the ground. :yikes: WOW! Didn't see anything was struck, storm blew through, went back to bed.

Fell back to sleep approx 3 am, alarm went off at 4 am.

My gf took her shower, I was shaving, water stopped, WTF. Could the lightning have struck my well pump? No time to investigate, finished with what my daddy used to call a "whore's bath" using stored water.

We're out the door at 5 am heading for Harvard with 1 hour sleep and only somewhat-clean.

Arrived in Cambridge approx 8 am, immensely enjoyed the morning ceremony, broke for lunch, then attended the business school sheep-skin award ceremony. Whooohooo, the boy's been learned, real good. :)

Had celebratory dinner at my son's restaurant choice, Capital Grille, on Newberry Street. THAT, was one heck of a meal and a good time for all. Gave my son a card containing keys to a BMW. The next page of the card explained that since he now has a masters degree in finance, he should be able to figure out how to get the rest of the car. :grin-square: Yes, I'm a real *****. Gave him some money, instead.

Was supposed to stay in Boston to visit some friends but the unknown reason for the water problem had to get sorted out, lightning being the number one suspect.

Decided to cut the trip short, but did take in a Friday night Red Sox/KC Royals game at Fenway. Wakefield didn't have his good stuff and the Royals won, featuring a grand slam. Didn't really bother me too much - I'm a Mets fan. GREAT seats right next to the Royals dugout. Talked Royals 3rd base coach, Rodriquez, into giving me a nice new baseball. ;)

Before entering Fenway, by Gate A, I noticed a Boston Billiards, right there, maybe only 100 feet up the street. With game time being a little over an hour away we decided to go to hit some balls and were disappointed to find that they were closed. Couldn't quite see through the double set of windows at the entry but my sense is they were closed, as in, for good. Probably this has been discussed before on AzB. Too bad.

Drove home late Friday night, met my electrician buddy Saturday morning and, yes, we guessed correctly, lightning struck and melted the circuit board of my well pump guard.

All in all, this was a very satisfying and fun trip. Nice to get together with my boys at the same time. Our schedules don't allow this luxury often enough. Wherever and whenever possible, enjoy your time with your family.

Gonna go now and get some brats, burgers & corn for the grill. Happy Memorial Day to all!

And, thanks again.

Best,
Brian kc
