Purchasing a Production Custom Cue

How's it going everyone,

I'm looking at purchasing a production custom or a custom cue within the next couple of months. To give you all an idea of the type of hit/feel I like, I play with a Tiger Hustler cue with a Pro X shaft with a kamui clear soft tip. My budget is somewhere in the 750-800 dollar range. I would prefer something that is one of a kind, with some points and inlays. I've been looking at some of the Jacoby Custom cues and J Pechauer cues that are on eBay, but I'm looking to maximize my purchase (seeing that this will be the last cue that I ever purchase). I apologize for creating another forum about cue recommendations, but I'd rather get the opinion of more advanced/ seasoned players, instead of making a purchase that I will regret in the short or long run.
Im looking forward to hearing some of your suggestions.
Thanks,
Dblo17

Check for sale section. Lot of nice customs in your price range. If you don't know what you want I would avoid new production cues because of resale if you don't like it. Most customs somewhat hold value. Also if you match your current cues pin you can still use your tiger shaft.

Jacoby all the way. best looking production cue with great playabilty(im still not convinced they are production, they make sick one of a kind cues). Schon cues will outlast your kids and play better than most customs, match it up with a low deflection shaft and it plays great. OB cues, plays great, probably the best LD cues out today. JPechauer I personally love their hit, they also make some good looking cues. for your price range, you can easily get a real nice custom from the for sale section or even have one built, Rat cues from ryan theewen are by far the best value out, great players and can built real nice customs for that price. and many others, Klapp cues with the old growth shafts are great players, but not sure about durability in terms of roll outs. there has been a few out for sale with some roll outs. Basically I just made it more confusing for you. but if this is the last cue you will ever buy, I would recommend going to poolhalls and try and get to hit with some customs and other cues to get the feel for them. Tiger cues are nice low deflection cues, but their hit is kinda soft and shafts are a bit whippy for my taste.

If you're going to have a custom made, I would recommend having them either use an LD blank in the build (as you shoot with an LD)...or send your shaft that you play now (if you plan on continuing with that shaft) so the builder can match the joint size.

You mentioned Jacoby and Pechauer...I have had a Jacoby with a radial pin in my hands awhile back...was one of the top 10 playing cues I've owned. IMHO

Ryan Theewen makes excellent cues and his attention to detail is that of world class builders.

Don't spend that much money on any production cue.

I would suggest if you are going to end up with a custom, try and purchase a sneaky or conversion from the builder first to get an idea how their cues play as far as the taper of their shafts, etc. I recently had a Tony Sauer sneaky that was as beautiful as it was playable. If I had not stumbled across my dream Titlist conversion from a local builder I would be ordering a fancier Sauer.

Really appreciate all the feedback that I'm getting from you all. Looks like I've been thinking about Jacobs for awhile now, so I think that Jacobs is what I will go with. I noticed that a few of you mentioned their excellent quality and playability matched with a LD shaft. Curious to know if any of you have ever shot with the Jacobs edge shaft? What is its hit similar to, in comparison with Predator, Ob, Tiger,, etc...

I have a Jacoby Edge shaft that I use on my Schon and I like it, really a nice playing shaft that I think hits similar to an OB Classic and with similar deflection properties. I've moved onto a Tiger X-Pro as I ended up really liking the skinnier shaft with the conical taper and it has a great hit too, but I still have my Edge and like the way it performs a lot.

I've already plugged Jacoby as making a great cue...but the Edge shaft was not for me...I play a Mezz WD700 and couldn't get used to the different feel of the Edge.

(But I really do like Jacoby cues themselves...)

Again, I recommend sticking with what you know. They can match a brand new Tiger shaft to the new cue...or should be able to match the new joint dimensions to your existing shaft.

I've played Tiger shafts prior to the Mezz...and liked them very well. In fact had a Tiger shaft in every joint pin configuration so I could play one on any custom I owned! LOL

I shot with the jacoby edge shaft today, and I can say that's it's not for me. Couldn't get use to the taper on the shaft, it just didn't feel right to me. I think I'm gonna get a Jacoby from Checkmarkauctions on eBay, and see if they can swap the jacoby edge shaft out with another LD shaft seeing that there are other LD shafts that are around the same price range or cheaper,

try the mezz wx900 also. that and the Tiger LD shaft are my recommendations. Jacoby edge hybrid is what I play with and would be my first recommendation, but it looks like you've already tried it and don't like it.

Personally I would buy a Schon and not think twice about it

More tournament wins than any other
Fantastic quality great play

As many cues as I have owned and I am playing one now
and i like it

Jacoby does make a great playing cue, but resale value seems low. I personally liked their hybrid shaft on my stainless jointed cue. Pechauer also makes a great production cue and also has a new ld shaft that I haven't tried yet. I would think you could get more cue for your buck with pechauer, as far as inlay work goes. I don't know what type of cue you are looking for, but there decade cues are very nice and should hold some value.

I use a Schon, STI-15, it has points and a little inlay. I like the feel (hit) with the aluminum weight bolt. You really need to shoot with several different cue makers sticks, what feels good to one player don't in anyway mean you will like the same cue. The feel of the cue is more important than saving a couple hundred dollars. Names on a cue means nothin' except reselling a cue.

Man,all these suggestions are funny. But it's what they believe, which is OK.Just get a $100 Schmelke & shoot with it.If all the folks commenting GAVE you their cue,you would not shoot any better than with that Schmelke,it's as simple as that !!!

I agree 100% To me, the play ability of the cue is the only thing that matters. If I like the hit, I don't care what it looks like or who made it.

For the budget you are setting for yourself I would certainly look at Jacoby, Pechauer and Bryan Mordt. All three would give u an excellent well made cue.

Please, try a mezz cue with either the Wx700 or Hybrid pro 2 shaft and you can buy a plain jane with either shaft or just fit shaft to existing butt and still have change for a nice steak and some toilet paper lol
Mezz shaft are one piece maple Ld shaft unlaminated, bang for buck and in my opinion give many cuemakers a run for their money !
Good luck :)
