Purpleheart - love it or hate it?

Purpleheart is one of my favorite woods. I like unique woods so anything with exceptional figure stands out. I love burls. All burls. Figured cocobolo too. I love tulipwood but surprisingly, though it often looks rather plain, Paul Fanelli uses a method that most don't by cutting it against the grain. It is amazing.

Purpleheart is unique more for its color than its figure. The color alone makes it attractive to me. But when you get a nice piece of curly purpleheart (I have one in the works) its a true thing of beauty.

First, I like Pupleheart on a house cue, or a 2 piece conversion.

BUT, most of the customs I have seen with Purpleheart I have NOT liked.

I don't know if it is the other woods that have been used with it on a custom or not, but the purpleheart always seems like it doesn't look right, The colors don't go together well or something.

I would like to see a custom or two where purpleheart looks good with the other woods, maybe bacote or burl. Anyone out there have a custom with purpleheart that looks good please post pictures of.

And what do you think of purpleheart?
Check out www.thecuedealer.com - there is a cue I built that is maple with simple purple heart points in the forearm and butt - everything else is black and silver. Am building a cue for VF that is amboyna with purple heart points recut with ebony - it will be a little different than with the inlay and other woods I am using.

Lol joe...

Can you post a pic of that maple into PH 6 pointer from Skip? I think it had a burgandy wrap...

THAT was a great looking PH cue from Skip.

I really like it. I have a Clint Putnam purpleheart that's too
stiff a hit for me but I wouldn't part with it cause it's so
darn purty.

I love purpleheart.

In a couple of months I'll be posting pics of the most gorgeous curly purpleheart anyone has seen. God I hate waiting for cues...

-Roger

I have so many photos of amazing purpleheart cues, it's sickening. But, of course, they're not my photos, so I can't share them.

I've attached a photo of my Jim Buss forearm with curly purpleheart and light coco. This photo doesn't do this cue any justice.

I also have my Gilbert Break Cue linked in my signature. Here's a link to the higher rez photo.

I think ...

That Purpleheart is one of those woods, with its color and figured grain,
has to be matched up with other colors that are complimentary to it,
and the selection for such, is somewhat limited. Done right, it is beautiful,
but not done right, it can be like looking at red and orange on the same cue, so to speak (clashing colors). I have seen some where ivory inlays look very good with it, and I have a weakness for Mexican Bacote, which I thihnk would compliment Purpleheart. Perhaps Bacote forearm and butt, with PH
points with Bacote, coco veneers, and ivory inlays in the forearm, and some
in the butt sleeve. I like SS joints, but I think on this one I would put dark
tan phenolic joint, rings with a touch of silver.

What are the parts called that are thin, and often border the outside of a ring?

Here is a simple purpleheart design that I think is pretty sparky . . . .
