Put the chalk back right side up.

Someone complained to me about it one time.
I wont name names, but let's call him measureman.
Then I went on to catch him doing it 5-times during the match.
He doesn't complain about it anymore, but when Hank's actually has paper towels in the mens room,
he will get a couple and wipe down the rails.
I think he's OCD, but hey, people have quirks.

really old habits

I never knew that chalk placement was such an important issue for some. From day one I knew it was a courtesy but no one ever really seemed to care. Now that I know I do try to remember to place it back on the table correctly. Even while practicing alone on my own table. In a public place I manage my own chalk and rarely set it on the table. However in a private residence where my chalk may be the wrong color I feel using the chalk provided is the correct thing to do and pocketing or controlling a piece of chalk that belongs to someone else could raise some questions about integrity. It doesn't cost me a thing to put the chalk down face up so if I'm playing with you and I accidentally set the chalk down incorrectly feel free to remind me as many times if necessary.
Thanks

even leaving chalk on the rails is annoying to me... I like to keep the chalk off the rails, then my opponent gives me a dirty look asking where the chalk is... dumbos

I cant believe nobody mentioned that this is a sharking method. I know a guy who will cheat you every which way he can and he puts the chalk down like that because he knows it bothers people. For bangers its a mistake they dont even know their making but for real pool players, their trying to shark you.

Here's what I did when it happened to me in a tournament where my arms were getting covered in chalk. I asked my opponent politely to please put the chalk down right side up so we both wouldn't be covered in chalk.

She ignored me, so each time it was my turn after that, I took a towel and took my time wiping every rail and turned every piece of chalk right side up before I shot. After a few innings of sitting in the chair watching me do this, she finally corrected herself and started putting the chalk down correctly.

Now thats funny..would have loved to been there to watch that go down,I'll have to do that..

Chris:

Great suggestion! It's amazing how people get all offended when pointed terms like "you" are used (even though it's technically correct -- he/she is the source of the problem), but when a "casual" observance is made without pointed terms, it's "read into" and accepted more readily.

Us human beings, such delicate creatures...

I thought the same thing, but it's only good the first time. If your playing partner doesn't catch on, any subsequent time you have to wipe the rails down HAS to be his fault. ;)

Well.... I guess if Shane does it, it must be OK.

When it comes to guys at SVB's level, they aren't clueless about much that goes on around a pool table, so I would have to think it's an eensy-weensy move. And judging by how bent people get about it, it can be used to great effect. Start wiping down the rails every time you come the table and the hint you are giving a player of that caliber is more along the lines that he's gotten in your head.:D

Then I'll have to do the Buffalo Bill thing from the movie Silence of the Lambs:

"It puts the chalk face-side up."

:p

I walk around the table and put chalk in my pocket..... Guess that's my subconscious way of dealing with it.

To me it's a non issue as there are plenty of more irritating pool habits that people have.

A lot of people do it. It's very simple to just politely point out the fact that he is making the rails dirty with chalk.

Why don't more people hold their chalk in the pocket? I rarely feel it against my leg and it's very convenient instead of running around the table for a chalk.

I use to do that but stopped because it was making the top of my pocket thread bare. Plus a few of the instructors teach that putting the chalk on the table is a signal to your brain that you are ready to shoot as part of the shot routine.

.

I have a friend of mine that does this. I have told him multiple times that this is not the proper way to put the chalk down. It is apparently a habit for him however. He doesn't even put it down with the chalk down but on the side. I can't count how many times I have started chalking with the paper side because of this. I also go around the table and make sure that he sees me turn all of them right side up again. Nothing really I can do. He is a good friend.

I keep my chalk in my pocket ---Kamui of course. But when chalk on the table is upside down, I just drop it in the pocket ( no ball return type ) or take it off the table and set it somewhere else. When there is none on the table --- so what.

I just don't like chalk dust on the table.

Use it

Chalk not being face up is annoying but it bothers me more when he grabs the chalk AFTER he shot to chalk up when I'm getting to the table.

Yes. Chalk the cue upon returning to the table. If returning to the table.... and only upon returning. Leave it for the guy who needs it!

I know a guy who takes it with him after every one of his innings. As he is chalking I ask him for it. He reluctantly gives it to me, and I inch a little bit further into his head each time. He hates it and blames me because he is so angry by the end of the match he doesn't care if he wins or looses. Dumb, really dumb.

... a few of the instructors teach that putting the chalk on the table is a signal to your brain that you are ready to shoot as part of the shot routine.

Yes, if your pre-shot routine includes placing the chalk back on the table. But if your pre-shot routine includes returning the chalk to your pocket, or retracting it on its tether, then that action will signal your brain just as well.

I also feel placing chalk face up is important.

Chalking and placing the chalk on the table is part of my rhythm when playing. I could NEVER consider putting it in my pocket. To each his own.

Admission .... I enjoy straight pool. Now, should I get into a groove, and once my run gets into the upper 30's or 40's or beyond, I have no idea if the chalk is face up, face down or inside out when I put it down.

Yes, This pizzes me off too! Usually on the second time I will say, "you aren't going to need this anymore."
