q wiz disc question

probably if you used it enough...

by enough i mean about 100 times a day for a year... it would taper it a lil more.. but it would take some SERIOUS effort.. its non abrasive, so it never should do anything but clean

non abrasive? I use this product and like it but it does feel like sand paper. I do not see dust from the wood when I use it but it does feel a litte abrasive.

I say you'd better WORRY ABOUT IT! The Q Wiz feels to me like about 800 grit sandpaper, maybe 400 grit, and will definitely reduce the size of the shaft. When you use it you notice it gets white stuff on it... right? That's wood from your cue. It's sanding dust... saw dust but finer.

Use the gritty side with extreme caution. If the shaft must have a gritty substance used to get the crud off then try some 1500 grit sandpaper and if that won't do it then maybe a few swipes with the gritty side of the Wiz. Follow up with a leather or paper burnishing to really polish it.

The Q Wiz dammed sure does remove wood. Be careful.

Of course it takes some wood off but I think used in moderation and with common sense it shouldn't pose a serious risk to the life of your shaft. I thiknk what works better is Magic Mesh - 4 cloths - 1500 grit, 1800 grit, 3200 grit and 4000 grit. Your shaft is glass smooth afterwards. I got it from Mueller's at last year's Expo.

It does remove the wood, but the amount is so insufficent that it doesn't really affect at all.

Of course it reduces the diameter. It is sandpaper. It takes off such a small amount it would take a lot of use for you to notice any difference. Use the leather side as much as you like. It only cleans your shaft.

The Q-wiz is unreal. I've used mine for years and have never noticed a reduction in shaft diameter. When I first got one, I talked to the manufacturer about that issue and they compared it to rubbing a paper bag on your shaft. Granted, that's marketing-speak if I've ever heard it, but the thing does a wicked job cleaning my shaft.

Ive used those Q wiz sheets for a long time, and I think it would take a long long time to see any real difference in diameter. If I am gonna clean my shaft, the magic eraser is the only way to go. I just tried that out for the first time the other day, and man was I impressed.

Empirical evidence

I have used Q-Wiz discs for years, off and on. I carry one in my case and maybe once every few weeks I will be in the middle of a match and feel a shaft getting a little sticky. In this situation, I may whip out a Q-Wiz and stroke the shaft may 6 times in long, fairly light, strokes. Then burning with the other side.

Just now, to get some empirical evidence, I took a dowel rod and used a Q-Wiz for 60 very firm strokes, cleaning the Q-Wiz after every 20 strokes. My digital caliper reveal that the Q-Wiz took off .01 to .02 millimeters in the diameter of the dowel rod. Now the dowel rod may be softer than a typical cue shaft, I don't know.

So I'm guessing that 8-10 normal uses of the Q-Wiz may reduce shaft diameter by .01 mm at most. If you use one every day, and press down pretty hard, you may be taking the shaft down at the rate of .01 mm per week or half a millimeter per year. It wouldn't surprise me if a shaft went from 12.75 mm down to 12.50 mm within a year of Q-Wiz use at 2-3 times per week.

You shouldn't need to be pressing down very hard. When I use it, I do just enough to remove some excess chalk that doesn't come off with a dry swipe of a towel -- the Q-wiz just shows some blue chalk.

I've used Q-Wiz on my Pechauer for 5 years & can't see a difference with a micrometer. It is the slickest thing ever.

I carry one but only use it as a stop-gap till I can get home to clean it properly. But it does the job at the club during a match.

The Q-Wiz has two sides. The lighter color side is okay. The darker side feels like 600 grit sandpaper.

If you want very light sanding, use Q Smooth.
