Question about an instructor

Sharkeye

I would like to echo the sentiments that have already been shared about Stan Shuffett. He is a class act all the way and one of the best instructors in the world.

Better to go with a BCA instructor instead of a house pro? Depends on the house pro and the BCA instructor, I'd assume.

IDK, good luck with that.
I tried a lot of instructors, some house pros without certification, some bca certified. I've about split down the middle with good and bad of each. I think a lot has to do with the person's natural ability to teach. Just as some people are natural players, others are natural teachers, and when you're real lucky the 2 "natures" coincide.

See Stan. I've been to his house for lessons, he goes above and beyond the call of duty, he really cares about his students. I hope to go back soon!

It seems instruction from a BCA instructor would be the best route. I have the DVD's from the Academy of the Cueing Arts( a gift) and I have been working very hard using the info there. I have improved my game enough to start beating my girlfriends on Fri/Sat nights out. I'm not ready to join a league but hope to soon. The DVD's feature a segment with Stan & Landon Shuffett so I guess he would be a good choice for instruction because he did take the class with the "Oyster" and teaches the same info. Any way, at some point I'll probably take formal instruction, just don't know where because I would want it to be close to home unless I win the lotto and can afford a trip to Florida.:) :)

i would take lessons from a guy that plays good under pressure. i figure anybody knows how to do that can give good pool lessons because he knows what to work on and he knows how to REALLY get ready and prepare. i have heard with my own ears supposedly good instructors give terrible advice. we live in a tough world i guess. one good question, do players that went to the instructor in question REALLY get better. ie are they winning more in apa now after lessons etc. that would be a really good sign of a good instructor.

Two of the best poolplayers in the south have taken lessons from Stan in the last year and they both praised him for the skill and teaching ability he shared with them. They were the legendary Stevie Moore and AZ's own Louis Ulrich, both pro players and winners of many tournaments, if he can help an already pro player he will help you also. good luck --Leonard

He books up pretty quickly. I booked a date with him yesterday for the first week in June, the earliest day that we can match up. So, I would contact him as soon as possible.

If someone has been playing several years, you develop tendancies...one session isnt enough, no matter how good the teacher is.....id scedule a 3 day session, twice a month for 6 months to see a lasting improvement....(ability to break and run) if not, you need 6 more months.....stay with your teacher, as long as needed....I cant see one lesson helping much, maybe a moral boost?

This is why I myself, only work with so many players at a time... When the lesson is finished, they are 'players' I put them through thier paces over a period of a month at a time, under any and all situations.....when I reveal a weakness, we scedule a custom session to suit this persons needs, then we get back to playing until I find something else....this takes time, but the results are always positive.....

YES....SPF=randyg

I have spoken with Stan, and it turns out we are playing in the same tournament this weekend so I will be able to speak with him more about his course. I have decided to take his 2 day course, but won't be able to until May because he is all booked up.

Thanks for everyone's input and from what I hear he is the right way to go.

I think the BCA Certified Instructor program is one of the best things that the BCA has done. Whoever was in charge of this program did things right, and turned out some quality instructors. There are many of these BCA Master Instructors throughout the country. In addition there are several people who post on here frequently who are great pool instructors. Randy G., Scott Lee and Stan Shuffet are just three who come to mind.

In addition many pro players act as House Pros, and they give lessons in their home room. You can learn a lot from them as well. And several top players offer private clinics and have schedules posted on their websites, and in billiard publications. There is no shortage of quality instruction available today for aspiring players. There is a wealth of knowledge to draw on, in addition to all the books and videos available as well.

A dedicated student of the game has a great advantage today over those who started playing thirty or more years ago. "When aspiration meets perspiration, amazing things can happen". JH

Great Instructor

:)
Finally had the time and money so I headed to Florida for class with the Oyster and a little R&R. A GREAT class, private instruction, and I learned a lot, especially the angles which I was having a problem with. I really appreciated the fact that Tim took the time to go through all the sessions until I felt I had a good understanding of each level of the class. Now I just have to apply it to my game, so I will put in many nights of practice.

I would highly recommend his class to anyone looking for instruction. His girlfriend even made dinner on the final day!! A great time and a great cook!

Went to the beach for 2 days after to chill before heading home!!! :)

Tim is a CLASS ACT.

Welcome to the forum.

Did he give his instruction in the nude?

He is a sleazy JERK and an embarrassment to the pool instruction community. Other than that, I have no problems with the guy.

Regards,
Jim

Stan is one of the top instructors on earth, for sure. Don't forget a call to Hal Houle, a visit to NYC with Ronnie V and a trip to Providence to see Joe Tucker. That should do it.

I am from Louisville Ky. and am pretty close to Stan Shuffett. Has anyone taken lessons from him or know anyone who has? I figure if he can produce a fine player like Landon he has to be a pretty good instructor.

Be sure whomever you choose that they send you away after your lesson with some paperwork reinforcing what you learned and some drills you can practice to help reinforce your lesson. Otherwise you will forget much of what was covered in the lesson and revert back to old habits.

Class act?

You have to be new around here. Besides pretending to Landon Shuffett on about 7 different websites, and parading around in the nude for no apparent reason - I guess he might be okay - notice I said "might be".

Next time you're down here in Florida, stop by Orlando and the class is on me.

No one will work harder for your improvement than Stan Shuffett. He has the entire package of skills needed. He's a retired teacher, of College and Billiards, a BCA Advanced Instructor, and a great communicator with boundless energy. He's a great player in his own right, and possibly his greatest credential, he taught and developed Landon into the player and young man that he is. Nuff said. My highest recommendation...Tom

I have read about Stan too and his skill. He took Tim's class. I decided to go to Flordia for 2 things, class and R&R and was not disapointed, class or the beach.

Again, I still recommend Tim.:)
