Question about Jose Parica

Taylor was a familiar face in the DC action rooms, according to the fish tales the old timers shared when I was growing up.

The same folks said while he was solid at all games, his non-banks games weren't at the level where he could tangle with the best there.
 
just because one person doesnt play another doesnt mean he is scared of him or cant beat him. lots of reasons why. one it may hurt future action. he may not lose enough . he may play too slow. or its too close to make enough and not worth while.

many would challenge a person who they know didnt want to play, to build their ego or make themselves look good. that went on all the time.

eddie was the best that ever lived at banks. no contest. he wasnt a high stakes gambler. but he did bet and made a living at pool. nice guy. i played him once. but he was also older than most of the players at the time.

few could beat him at 9 ball shootout as he would push out to tough banks that they had no chance of making and were almost a hanger for him.
but yea he wasnt in the very top of players at that time . so what.

One of our best one hand Canuck players (could lose on a full rack) beat everybody on short rack snooker….took a drubbing at one hand 9-ball in DC….discovered it was Eddy Taylor.

yeah, its so sad that some people are undermining Parica's accomplishments because of this and some other factors. even sadder is the fact that some of these detractors are his own countrymen. I remember getting into an argument with a nobody before discrediting Parica and even got to a low point on personally attacking me. what a lowlife of a crab. anyway, ran late into a party again and congrats to Parica for being inducted finally.

I have a confession to make. while Parica is renowned as the Father of Billiards in the Philippines and Efren as the GOAT, Andam is my favorite pool player and fashioned my game to his typical soft and slow-rolling precision shots. I find his technique calming and makes you focus on your game.
 
two of the best players that ever lived with different styles. when each in their prime if playing 9 ball i would bet on parica.

although i bet my money on dan louie in the 80's when parica first came over and wasnt well prepared yet for our tables and conditions.
and won handily.

dan bet 500 on himself and had others with him. i asked if i could bet and dan said yes. as that is customary to ask when cutting in on another's action. so i asked parica'ss backers how much more would they take and i would cover it. but they said just another 500.

and the players from there were smart gamblers and won all they could and quit when they saw they had a game that wasn't productive.

american players most of them anyway, played till their money ran out and couldn't borrow any more.

I don't know about trustworthy.

He lived in my Filipino buddy's house in San Diego for I don't know how long and slept on his couch.

He borrowed $2,000 off my buddy and hasn't paid it back in about 30 years.
 
30 years ago when I was getting back into pool, I went to a tournament down by the Atlanta airport in some nondescript pool hall. Many named players were there, and it was wild, pool tables in one half the room and full sports book on the other. Gambling of all sorts going on, lots of "characters", I was probably the only guy in there not "packing heat". I wasn't familiar with Parica, but in my mind he was "that little Mexican guy". He had a woman with him, older, heavy, wearing about $11 worth of Wal-Mart clothes. She was booking all his action. She reached inside her bra and hauled out a 3 inch roll of bills that would gag a mule. I was stunned.
 
Somebody here was asking if Parica’s family was well off. His dad was a cop, it’s a toss-up about his family’s wealth. I know this for a fact because they live a few blocks from where I reside. I’ve watched Jose play using a Coke case to propped him up on his shots. He was a reed thin 5 foot boy, about 12/13 years when he and his dad were hustling the shortstops in all of the seedy pool halls back home.

I read his family was in the TV industry; inferred that play money was not a problem.

Again, I will repeat, Keith and Efren were, are, and always will be good friends. Keith does not have a mean bone in his body. Those who know him well can attest to this. Every time we would run into Efren, the two of them smile broadly at each other. Keith is more close with Jose Parica than Efren, but believe me, he has a great deal of respect for Efren. He calls him "Effie" today. But Keith has a nickname for everybody, even me. It is all in good fun!

Gosh, this is an old thread. I was just alerted to it with a "like" on this and another post.

Interestingly, this photo came up in my Facebook memories today. I have a few photos of Keith and Efren, and all of my Efren photos, he's smiling. If you can get an Efren photo with him smiling, that's gold. He probably gets asked hundreds of times a day when he's out and about for a photo opp. I can only imagine how much patience one must have to be able to do that each and every time you go out in public.
