Question about shaft/hand cleaning

I posted this in the middle of another thread but wanted to get a few more opinions so here goes. The smoothness/slickness of my shaft goes hand in hand with my play. When i first start playing on a particular day I am fine (Hands are clean/shaft is smooth) but after a while depending on the table condition, my hand gets dirty with chalk/oils etc. As my hand gets dirtier and my shaft starts to get all gummed up my play worsens. Problem is when i am playing someone, especially when I am down, i don't like taking a break, going to the bathroom, washing my hands, then walking back to the table. I know it sounds stupid as it only takes a couple of minutes to do it but it is what it is. It also sucks when you are in a room playing by yourself, around people you don't know, and you want to go wash your hands but if you have a nice cue/case combo you either count on the honesty of strangers and roll the dice (Only in vegas, and in craps, not my gear) or you take everything with you on your way to the bathroom every half hour. My hands do not sweat at all so I am lucky there. Is there a product out there that is portable/small enough that you can keep in your case and bust it out when necessary to get your hand clean again. Similar to the wetones pouches i have seen. Unfortunately they leave your hands with a stickiness to them...kryptonite to me. My game's more clark kent then man of steel anyways thats for sure. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Off point but I have heard that sandpaper at 1500 and above will take off virtually no wood. Any opinions? I might try out that quad zero steel wool I've heard about. On my sp first of course...no offense Mr. Sherbine

I think you have the write idea about washing your hands. Often it is your hands gummy and not the stick. It will feel like the stick and that is why you see too many people reach for that baby powder or hand chalk. How would you feel about putting a wet washrag in a zip lock bag? Sounds stupid but its simple. Get home and put in the wash. It may not look cool but if it helps you win you may see others doing the same.

I have an empty Visine bottle which I filled with denatured alcohol and I carry it in my case. Cleans the shaft and my hands. I use a piece of T shirt to do the wiping.

Mr. Clean magic eraser. I cut one in half and keep it in my case.
Your shaft will come out like new. Burnish it with a piece of leather to get the smoothness back.

Hi, I use alcohol wipes like the Dr. uses before they give you a shot. They only take up much room as a book of matches,, are inexpensive, dry fast, and also work for a quick shaft / ferrule wipe down. You need a couple of them to clean your hands, and any drug store sells them.
Thanks,
Rudie

That sounds scary! I'd hate to get your bottles mixed up and squirt alcohol into my eye.

I've tried alcohol before I don't like the smell. Frequent trips to the restroom to wash up is the best.

Failing that bring an extra hand towel and get it damp. Use it to wipe off your hands and have another dry towel handy to dry the hands. On you infrequent trip to the restroom, take the damp towel to rinse.

I use used paper towel to wipe off my shaft.

My hands sweat a good bit also, and I was thinking of trying the waterless hand sanitizers. The nurses here at my office say that the germ-x version doesn't really leave a residue, but I haven't tried it yet to see how it works. They make small bottles that you could put in the pocket of your cue case.

1. I haven't used Visine since 1981 when I quit smoking dope.

2. The label has been removed and another put on it on which I've printed with a Sharpie "90% Alcohol".

That should alleviate the fears.

Well........ if you're not smokin dope any more, less chance that you'll squirt yourself in the eye with it too......
