Question for league players

I think this place has got alot better...When I started looking on here the IPT deal was a big topic (lets not relive those days) and for a long time I didnt come on much because it scemed every time I did the first 3 things were about sombody getting robbed in some way or another and I couldnt post to say "just do what Charles Ingalls would do". you know the father from Little House on the Prairie.

Scemes to me that for a while there has been alot of good stuff on here, Questions and answers. You still get the squabbles between certain people but just dont look at any of the aiming system threads and you'll avoid much of that..

I would say the answer to Neils ? is somthing like,
1. lower level players dont know what they dont know so its hard to ask a ?
2.Its sad but true you can get flamed on here for no reason other than people dont always get the point of what you type..as ive said befor "its amazing what you can leran about what you think on here"
3.people worry about looking stupid...just keep in mind "we cant see you"

A few days back I had a thought, I didnt post it but I think I will because I do agree with the main point of this thread. This place should be a haven for people that want to get better at the game, and questions should be welcomed...and I must admit I thought it might be a little corny, but what the hell you cant see me...

i think the tone of your op is also your answer in a nutshell. i found your post condescending to league players. basically your saying (and you can deny if you want to but it doesnt matter) that the only way a league player can get better is to post questions on here for A players (like yourself?) to answere. frankly for reasons already stated (getting flamed) i would never ask for help with a particular shot. also since i have no way of knowing most of the posters on here (you included) how could i be assured i was getting accurate advice. also i find cuetable a difficult medium to learn from. while i am a D player at best (and probably will also be despite hours of practice) i shot in league with several run out players who are always happy to help on a question or shot and since they can see me shoot they can help me understand whether my problem is how i planned the shot or how i shot the shot.

az is great for many reasons and i visit daily but to paraphrase grady asking questions is fraught with peril

I didn't read Neil's post as condescending - seems to me he just asked a simple question that he has been wondering about. I see where he is coming from

On the other hand I do agree that there has been some league player bashing going on in some threads that have caused me to think "well I better remember never to ask any questions relating to actual playing situations"

There is so much info available here and "out there" and everyone has their own most effective way of learning. Pays to take it all in and go with what works for you.

So Neil - when I get home from league tonight I will post up a question about my "issue" & a question about depth perception

The vast majority of people are not coachable.....ie, they do not want to get better.....they claim to, but they'd rather just do it their way....they have fun doing it their way, and even if they ask, they still just want to do it how they always have....

They'd call time out, "what should I do?"......me, "well, if you bank it, you should have natural leave on the 8, and if you miss, it should leave a lot of green and a tough leave to run out - it maybe tough to avoid the scratch if you shoot in the corner and we really don't want then to have ball in hand"

Many times someone new here will ask for help and the answers range from.....stupid question, use the search function or that question has been asked so many times I won't comment on it......but they do take the time to post that they won't answer.

I love that last line! They take the time to post that they won't waste their time posting! I've seen that! LOL

I do agree with other explanations that have been given as to why we don't post more questions. Especially the reply about the elitist attitudes that surface on occassion. I was told to stay out of the Room Owner's area when I responded to what I felt were some very rude and arrogant comments about pool players in general and I let my anger get the best of me and I posted a response. And yes they're right, I'm not a Room Owner, so I will not comment in there anymore. I find it very ironic that the thread was discussing "what's pool's problem?" Hmmm ???

And I really don't think Neil's intent was to insult anyone or imply that league players suck. I think he's a good poster , he's always willing to help out and give advice. And Neil, I certainly hope you don't feel your input here "isn't worth it" because some of us do think it's worth it!

but this is on a money league - I could just drop-kick him.

I do play 1 night of APA - I have a real mellow attitude there - just look at it as "practicing against other players instead of by myself" - try shots I wouldn't try in money leagues or tournaments :smile:

Since I'm just learning, I've loved picking up every crumb of info I can find, wherever I can find it. I first found this site there were lots of cuetable questions, and I thought they were great. I've noticed there aren't as many now. I've yet to really consider myself a 'member' which might be why I'm a bit hesitant.

But, the next time I have a chance, I'll try and make a quick note of a what would you do scenario. Hopefully, I won't need a flame retardant jacket or chain mail armor if it comes off as too stupid a question.

No league for a few weeks though.

Learning something new has always been the most fun in pool, and I have always looking for something new to learn. In the past year, there are 20 certified instructors who have joined and started a Q&A section called "Ask Instructors" on CueTable.com. These are people who teach beginners everyday for a living, understand common issues, know how to explain things clearly and stand by their words.

The number 1 reason I don't respond to anyones post with table diagrams.....I CAN'T SEE THE !#%$@# THINGS.

I normally browse AZ from work, and most of the graphics don't show up.

I think it's due to how posters insert them or because I'm behind a firewall.

Since there are so many league players on here, some admitting to wanting to get better, why are you NOT posting cuetable diagrams of problems you have had?? Or asking more questions about what you could have done, or should have done?

There are a number of good shooters on here that can help you out. Why not take advantage of this great resource???

Neil- First, I have read all responses to this point and can see some of the points made, but do not believe you had "ill" intent with this post.

That said, my problem with the diagrams is really pretty simple. I gave you reps last night for your response the the cuetable thread because of your thorough response. Most responses aren't this way. They are something along the lines of "shoot this, shoot that, the rest is simple from there". I don't believe that does anyone any good.

The ones I feel are especially helpful are the ones with the video links, or at least a "new" cuetable with their shots diagrammed. The video links are nice because you have the visual, plus, as others have mentioned, you get to "see" the person giving advice is "as advertised".

One other pet peeve is when you get longer threads and someone doesn't quote the table layout and you have to keep scrolling back up to see the table layout, but maybe that's just me.

As far as the "general outlook" of leagues/league players on this site... who cares?? For some of us, that is about all that is available other than the occasional tournament at a local bar. Some of us have no other avenue to "competitive" pool than leagues, which is too bad.

A note to the "newbies" (whatever that is). Most say they have been lurking for some time prior to posting. These people should be familiar with the tone of this site by that point. When I ask questions, I am as specific as possible and usually put disclaimers in the thread about what I don't want to hear. This has worked well, and the thread usually stays "on topic". Imho it would not be a firewall issue if you can read this sentence now.

that it would be helpful to open a new window (folder) with just the cuetable layout.

That way, when you are responding to a layout problem or how to play the table, you can just click back and forth. Would be easier than scrolling clear back to the beginning of a thread, or if you are on page 2 or beyond, you can not get back to the layout.

Thanks for the note. While I don't have an immediate solution to this one, I will research into some kind of server technology in the future. In the old RSB days, most of the news readers all have this tree structure for thread discussion. It would be nice to have that instead of linear posts.
