Was pool ever an NCAA sport? And any comments regarding the topic I think would be interesting, like having a structure in pool like other sports have. Like a college career, then maybe some kind of minor leauges, and have an overall leauge for all pro players. I dont know, it might not work for various reasons, but I think it would be cool.

There at least was some sort of college level pool. I used to hear how Nick Varner was a champ of his school.....among others.

I think this is as close as it gets. Big names have won it, including Max Eberle (2X), Bob Jewett (AzB'er!), Nick Varner (2X).

They have the ACUI that does collegiate tournaments...

Of course, pool players on the whole don't tend to be the most academically minded people in the world. What's that again about pool ability being a sign of a misspent youth...?

Not to say they're not smart, but they don't seem to be drawn to going to a top-tier college or getting an MBA anytime soon. They'd prefer to educate themselves on the green felt.

This is surely changing, for better or for worse. I think the only way to really change it would be to get something bigger than the ACUI. I remember going to UCLA and being in awe of how incredibly stupid the NCAA basketball and football students were. I could tell stories, but people would think I was exaggerating. And yet, they went to UCLA -- one of the top 25 universities in the nation.

Pool players that I've met are smarter than those guys I interacted with at UCLA. Ain't fair, is it?

I'm pretty sure Dan Louie was also a collegiate national champ.

Correct. Twice (back-to-back, like Eberle and Varner). Good thing you're from Washington to remember!

i appreciate the comments, the reason i ask is that when you go to the NCAA website for athletics, it doesnt list billiards as one of its sports. And your right steve, my ex graduated from ucla, and I also knew some athletes that went there and the discrepancy between the standards of academics between atlhletes and non-athletes is crazy. Have you ever seen a future draft pick interviewed? Holy smokes I know little kids that sound more articulate. And who is this vardaman guy, ive never heard of him, anybody know anything about his game?
