question on case weight

just jokin' around

i have an instroke 3x5 cowboy and i'm looking to drop to a 2x4 mostly due to the weight. when the instroke is loaded it's just a pain in the ass to lug around, especially for a whole day at a tournament. i am looking into buying an older 2x4 george or a new gtf or ron thomas style case. does anyone know any of those would be significantly lighter?

the most convenient case as far as weight and carrying around goes, as far as I can tell, is the Sterling Wave case. It's fairly light as it is, but it also has extremely comfortable shoulder straps and handles. It comes with two straps so you can wear it like a backpack, which is a godsend when you're lugging it all day at a tourney. You can also take one of the straps off if you'd rather just stick to the one-shoulder style. You can get a brand new 3x4 in the $130 range.

You can just go to the Gym and work out and get a little stronger  But i know what you mean tho after carrying around my M-4 for so freaking lonf carrying my Instroke 3x7 should be a breeze. Dont Jack Justis make and ultra light pool case ?

I agree with the Sterling Wave suggestion. I just got mine last week (4x8), switched from a 3x7 instroke. It's a lot lighter and the shoulder straps are so much more comfortable. The only downside to the Wave is that there isn't a top handle, but the side handle is very comfortable as well. PM FAST_N_LOOSE, that's who I ordered mine from.

I, too, have the Sterling Wave case, but in the 3x4 configuration. Truth be told, while the case itself is light, I really cannot see myself wanting to carry anymore than I already am.

Cases can only get but so light, with regards to 'dry' weight. It's when we start to fill them up with the cues that the weight begins to become apparent. And don't forget all the 'stuff' that we tend to shove into the pockets of these cases. Heck, just a container with about $10 in quarters is going to add some serious weight. It would be interesting to see what the weight difference would be with full pockets and then again empty pockets...I bet we would all be a little surprised! LoL!!

ok i can't compete with the cool factor of the m-4:thumbup: i am a big fat bastard but i also go to the gym and lift like a mother so the gym time isn't the main concern (i admitedly fall far behind in anything that can be called cardio);) but the case is just a pain in the ass. it's big, it's bulky it's heavy. and thanks for the sterling wave reco's but i am really only curious about the case style i mentioned. i like the looks of the george/thomas/gtf style cases. i think the sterlings look exactly like the desriptions given - they look like a back pack a student would carry to class. i was looking for a little more classic look, it's just the look i prefer. that's why i got the instroke in the first place, now i am wishing i had checked out the gtf first.

Any pics of that 4x8 ? Is it a hard care or soft case ? Its got my attention now...

I assume you're asking about the wave 4x8? If so, pics can be seen here:

They are hard cases and do everything you need within budget. They are without a doubt the best dollar-for-dollar case on the market, and no I'm not affiliated with them in any way other than I own one myself, as do an ever-growing group of my pool buddies.

Have you tryed wheeles I now it sounds crazy but it works really well with my cases, But I also have straps like a back pack on my case.If you want the wed site let me know.

Sterling also makes a classic style mono-color case which weighs the same as the Wave cases.

One thing a lot of people don't know is that the leather adds a lot of weight to a case. The thicker the leather the more it weighs. Also oil tan leather weighs more.

Also regarding the new Sterling cases I have designed them so that the capacity is more in a smaller space. Our 3x6 and 4x8 are about the size of our competitor's 2x4 and 3x6 cases respectively.

A friend of mine had a 3x5 cowboy case and I picked it up at a pool room and it was very heavy (he had the case loaded with cues and shafts). I don't know the exact weight, but my back isn't in the best shape and I couldn't lug that thing around.

I have an original 2x4 It's George case and it's significantly lighter than the 3x5 instroke. My It's George only has 1 short pocket so I don't use it all the time. I use a 2x4 Porper case with the short and long pocket (the vinyl model) and it's light and easy to carry around. The 2x4 Porper cases are inexpensive and they seem to hold up pretty well.

I've owned Whitten, Thomas, and Justis cases and I sold them all and I use a 2x4 Joe Porper case.

The GTF 2x4 is probably the lightest of the bunch. I have one & it is very light. No top handle, though, and the inside fit is very tight. Not the kind of shoulder strap that is actually meant to be "used". I don't think you'll do better than the wave for no fear - no nonsense comfort over the course of a long day tourney, or over a week's time at the Riv in Vegas. Not the "style" factor of the others, but great for the conditions you sited & if you bump, tear, or scratch it - who gives a hump for the price. And you certainly won't lack for cue protection in the bargain. John's seen to that as he always does.

I currently carry an older 2x4 George. At the BCA tourney in Vegas this year I checked out the 2x4 GTF cases at a vendor. From what I could tell they seemed to weigh about the same as my George empty.

I'm in the market for a lighter case myself. I used to carry around a 3x7 Instroke leather cowboy, and with 2 or 3 cues and butts, it's just too heavy. So I'm downsizing....only carrying two cues, and looking for a lighter case.
