Question on cloth, table setup for Soren Sogard

Local place just got a used Soren Sogard table, I'm so excited!!! Will be the only carom table here in Jacksonville and anywhere nearby, other than some very shoddy ones in the Little Vietnam area of town...

Owner is having his normal pool table crew set it up, I'm assuming the basic assembly of frame, slate, leveling, etc. is very similar to a pool table.

But what's different? What type of cloth should he buy, what options are there these days, and any pros/cons as far as playability, price, etc.? Anything special that needs to be done that a pool installer might not know in order to make the table play as good as possible?

Looking forward SO much to playing again, would love to travel up to Savannah for one of those monthly tournaments if I can get back to a respectable game again. I'm like a little kid seeing a new candy store open up!!! Might be bad for my work production though... :)

Thanks guys for any insight,
Scott

For my taste the only cloth for three-cushion is Simonis 300 Rapide. I think the only other real choice is Granito M. Don't let them use Simonis 760 or 860.

Also pool table mechanics may not know where the spots go, and they might want to put stickers on the spots rather than making light ink marks. If they put stickers on, take them off and mark the spots yourself with a ballpoint pen. (Just my not so humble opinions.)

EDIT: I forgot about the table's heater. It really wants to be heated, so they will need an electric outlet with the right voltage. If the table was used here in the states, the voltage is probably 110, but in other countries it's 220. And the thermostat should be set to at least 90F.

Stretch the bed cloth much tighter than pool. There's a certain sequence for folding the corners but unfortunately I lost my notes. The technique gives better backup angles. When watching a master carom mechanic do a table it looks like the rail cloth is also stretched tighter.

You'll know in time if its not tight enough. I'd suggest if they haven't done this before to not trim the cloth too close. That way if it loosens it'll be easier to re-stretch. Then trim it up.

If they haven't covered a carom table before this, don't waste your time and money.

Slate seams and leveling need to be dead on or you will notice. A quality machinist level is a smart choice.

i'll second the machinist level. DO NOT even try to think you can do this with a carpenters level. and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It will take hardly any time to level the sogard, they have the best leveling system, as the bed floats on bolts. no shiming, etc, like on pool table. it's an excellent system.

Thanks for the replies so far. I realize that a carom table mechanic would be the best choice, but the table is on loan for now so they probably don't want to waste any additional expense, especially not knowing if it will get any play or not (besides me!!!).

I'm just trying to gather as much info as I can to pass along in hopes that the table is at least setup fairly decently. Cloth, stretching, leveling, and temperature were great so far. Any other tips or confirmations would be great, appreciate it!!!

On Loan? pretty weird. We`ve got one for sale here in savannah....best deal to be had...just saying

Scott, Where is the room? I have a friend who has been looking for a place to play in Jacksonville. He comes up to Savannah every month for the tournament and would like to be able to practice someplace close to home. If you could post the name of the room and address it would be appreciated.....Pete
