Question on how I handled this...

NBS8,

You already know my opinion.

If there was a dick involved here it was him.

Last session, I played against him and beat him. He didn't like it all that well and he's hassled me ever since.

Since he won against me this past Tuesday night, he'll probably quiet down on me but I will say that while he was still racking, he began sharking me before I had the chance to even snap the rack.

You also said he was sharking one of our other players during his match with this guy.

Remember, he is just an overconfident smug nit. Operative word: Nit

Being a shark is probably his only real weapon. IMO, he's not all that great but I was damned happy to see you put him in his place properly.

I walk over to him and calmy said, "you can go ahead and sit down"

You just lowered yourself to his standard. Say nothing, run out, shake his hand at the end and move on. I have a hard time not being a total dick and not saying a word is being the best dick you can be.

I did approach him after all games were finnished and shook his hand, but it was that awkward "you know you were a dick" handshake.

Then he wanted to gamble... and I simply said that I had no interest in playing him again, even for a dollar

Do you hate money too? I love playing grudge matches, great motivator. Plus his pride msy have emptied his wallet. I think you missed a great opportunity.

There is always aggression in pool, veiled or open you have to use it against them. You can make guys like him go on tilt for weeks. Treat him like a customer.

You did fine

The guy is a jerk. He will not forget and you will own him. When you play him, SAY SOMETHING TO JAR HIS MEMORY, he will not get it out of his mind and you will own him. Guys like that deserve to loose.

agree

The worst move you made was to say you wouldn't play him for a dollar. I say that because if wasn't barking loudly and just offered to play you afterward, then none of the stuff that transpired really bothered him in the least. Anyone i have ever dealt with like that usually warms up a bit after some money play, unless you bust them. I understand you were p.o.'ed, but like your friend said, probably his best move is to shark.

Also agree that your "feeling bad about it" gives away your true personality. We all learn a little about ourselves at times like these.

You were fine, but another way of handling it might be to just come right out and
ask why he wouldn't shake hands.

"No handshake? Did I do something to piss you off?"

Maybe you have a bad rep or there's some misunderstanding that needs clearing up.
That or he's just paranoid about germs.

No bad rep. He walked over to the table and offered a handshake. The guy says "I'm racking"

Only thing I can think of is some people hate to be interrupted in the middle of a task.
Like when I'm down on my shot I hate when someone expects me to get up off the shot
so we can chitchat or I dunno, try to find a coin to lend them for a flip.

The racker may have felt it lacked common sense to stick out the hand when his own hands are tied up.

Still, it's not like he was carrying groceries, and racking doesn't really require focus or rhythm like shooting.
I personally would never leave a guy just hanging just so I can finish racking.

Another plausible explanation is the racker's just a tool.

it was late, and I rode with Six Shooter, so he would have had to wait on me, and I'm in the Army, and have a wife and 7 month old daughter at home...
So for me to stay and steal everything in this guys wallet would have caused issues on numerous fronts. 4am comes awful early when you dont even get home until 1140 (withouth staying to gamble).

And in all honesty... times are tough. I am firm believer in "don't gamble what you can't afford to lose", and right now, even knowing that I wouldnt even break a sweat taking his money... on principle, i won't play for money that is not discretionary, and as far as my life goes right now... there is no discretionary money.

Not to mention, that I'm an old fart who is also getting up at 4 am.

Though I would have loved to have seen it go down, I find myself wondering if I could have stayed awake. LOL.

Our team was stressed anyway due to some internal drama.

Possibly, but its difficult to be a germophobe and touch bar box balls.
Least the ones around these parts. You actually want to wash your hands
after you rack. I swear, you can scrape the funk off the balls with your finger nail.

Times are tough and your principle is sound judgment!

Thank You for your service to our homeland. Keep crushin' em'.

I'd say he had it coming unless he wasn't cocky during the match. I've played matches with players that did the same thing but I believe some guys don't like to be that friendly until the match is over with, keeps it all business for them. I try to avoid a lot of "friendly" chatter during the match with opponent so I can stay focused on beating them and not being friends.

However, I always shake my opponents hand before a match and wish them luck....shake hands after win or lose always just to show sportsmanship and control of my emotions...not always easy for sure!
