question on slipperywrap, and narrow cue butt

I'm a converted snooker player who recently purchased a 4k series predator. I find the wrap slippery, anyone got any suggestions to reduce this?

Also, I'm considering getting a butt made with a narrower than normal butt, similar to a snooker butt ( 30mm) .
Does anyone think this would have a major impact on how the cue performs?

Thanks for any suggestions, comments

i really like the thin snooker butts too. you might be able to have a cue maker make your butt narrower, it won't affect the performance as that is really all in the shaft. you might lose a little bit of weight on it though. as for the wrap, any cuemaker should be able to put a different kind of wrap on it, stacked leather might do the trick, i think regular leather will be too slippery too. or perhaps some lacquer over the linen. if the wraps don't suit you then i guess you gotta go with a wrapless cue. predator has sneaky petes and the p2 that can be had wrapless.

I don't think

the feel and balance would be right if you had the butt taken down. I would send it back, get your money back, and have a cuemaker make one from
scratch. I would guess that the process for making a narrow butt cue is different than a regular one.

My cue from Shurtz has a skinny butt, but it was built that way, and weighs 20.2 oz..

Get some beeswax at a sewing store and rub it on the area where you hold the cue when stroking. It ought to do the trick.

I recently had a stacked leather wrap installed on a cue that had a linen wrap. I'm used to a nowrap cue and wanted this particular linen wrapped cue to feel like a nowrap cue and the forum folks recommend the stacked leather.

They were right. The stacked leather is very nice. I got it done by Muellers.

I have a stacked leather wrap on my sneaky pete. Sometimes, if the humidity is way low, even it becomes slippery. That's when a judicious application of beeswax does the trick.

Thanks for info, so the bees wax isn't sticky??

Sticky isn't the word for it. Slightly tacky is a better way to describe it. What I do is take a rag or towel to the cue after putting it on so the feel is agreeable to my taste. After a while, it will wear off, and you my wish to reapply it, or leave it as is, which is what I usually do.

Carom players use rubber grips. The are tubes of thin rubber that roll onto the wrap area.

Somewhere along the line, slippery wraps entered into pool tradition. I think that was a mistake.

Yes indeed.
Yet another instance of fashion statement over functionality.

Would be apprehensive about the 'slightly tacky ' grip.
As I don't live in the states, I'm unfamiliar with what baseball players use.
Thanks for the feedback

FWIW, in my experience the least slippery wrap (short of one of those rubber grips) is no wrap at all. Leather comes next, and then linen (which to me is the most slippery). I've never tried a cork wrap so I don't know how cork would feel.

Some folks like a somewhat slippery wrap because they sometimes use a slip stroke on certain shots. Different strokes for different folks.

Cork is less slippery than no-wrap. Many think it is the most "neutral"
wrap.

The least slippery was the old fashioned<pre-70s> Irish Linen.

Worst thing that can happen is you spend all of $1.50 for the beeswax, and don't like it, and you rub it off.

Best thing is you cry out Eureka! I found it!

I would recomend if you want a great playing cue with a slighty smaller butt send Joe Baker a PM. His cues hit like a dream.

I went from a Jacoby player to a Joe Baker. With the smaller butt it makes me have a lighter girp and impoves my shot making

I too am a converted snooker player and have found the diameter of the Meucci butt is nice and narrow. Only problem with Meucci is finding one with a straight shaft and the fact that you're probably going to experience the same slippage issue as the Irish Linen Wrap is covered with some kind of clear lacquer or enamel.

You can also try those horrible neoprene sleves that fit on the butt of your cue but they tend to look really cheesy.

i wouldnt change the butt at all - pool is a different game to snooker and the cues are different. just embrace the change and try and get used to it.

as for the wrap, try a different one. you've got plenty of options to get a new wrap on it.

good luck!
