I have played some pool with a man who is able to accomplish good racks
by hand=no triangle! IF all racks are done this way is it legal to play this
way? He has played a lot of 14.1 in the UK and says it is quite common.
Anyone have experiance with this? Jack
PS he is a very capable player ,not a bloke!

You must be talking about NY's Danny Barouty. ;)

It flips me out to watch Danny "rack" like this -- and how quickly it's done.

I do know that while I was serving in the US Navy, there were a lot of Filipinos that racked this way, because where they came from, racks were either broken, unreliable, or just plain unavailable, so many of them developed the skill to rack with their bare hands. I.e. creating the triangle of balls against the foot rail, and then with a quick and accurate push motion of their hands, roll that assembled rack formation of balls onto the foot spot, using their hands to "guide" the formation into place on the fly. And that's with all 15 balls (i.e. to play Rotation, 8-ball, or One Pocket).

It's a skill for sure, and one I wish I possessed. I just need to practice it, but practicing this is kind of hard, because I want to shoot! :D

I remember Mike Massey doing this during some exhibitions. Danny racks 'em faster though. I can rack by hand, but it usually bugs the cr@p of my opponent. :)

Funny. I used to watch my father rack like this when I was a kid, and I've been doing it ever since I could shoot. I thought everybody did it. It's quicker than using the rack and you can usually get a tight pack, but I wonder if the extra handling might put more oil from your hands on the balls. I know, either way you have to pick the balls up. I never rack this way during a match because I figure the opponent won't think it the right way to do it.

Please do this against Mike while he is filming so the forum can enjoy
his reaction! Just kidding.

LOL ...... Jack, I would not mine at all. It would just mean that i was shooting & putting up points if Don was racking.....

Hi there,

i rack usual always by hand- just in training-matches (8-9-10 ball) i use magic-racks, bc the opponents *want* it.

racking by hand is the quickest way and comfortable for me :)

p.s. and cheap, too! lol^^

Marop does this very well on several of his videos. Unfortunately, the camera position obscures his technique, but his racks come out nice and tight.

Hand Racking

Actually got a column out of this once. First guy I ever saw do it was Joe Bachel, who was the night man at NY's famous room McGirr's back in the '50s. His name was inevitably mistaken for "Bachelor" (he was married three times), and he was one of the finest practice players I ever saw; I really never learned too much more about him. He used his personal, well-waxed set of balls, so his racking by hand was actually a bit more difficult than it looked. Metaphor for the times, I suppose; I haven't seen anyone do that in years and years. Interesting post about the Filipinos. GF

Yes it is impressive but is it legal for match play?
Remember the heated thread about balls over the rack-line? See where
this is going?:p:grin:

Bill's table is tapped with a template similar to this. Good idea really, nothing rests on cloth and if a ball rolls over the area I assume it could result in a bad roll less frequent than with magic rack or slug doctor (not to knock these products, but still). Bill's multiple runs shot on video could prove that this approach makes racking easy and at the same time doesn't interfere in his game.
