Radial Pin

Other than customer choice, why would a cuemaker decide to use a radial pin or a 3/8-10 or 11 as his or her preferred pin over others?

It seems like a couple of years ago a lot more cuemakers were using the Radial Pin whereas now, it seems like I see a lot more 3/8-11's.

I always thought the Radial Pin made the cue hit a little softer or not as hard as other pins.

Thanks and I hope this is not a rehash for past threads.

In my humble opinion the Radial Pin and their Tap are one of the very best things to ever happen to cuemaking. The pins are accurate and the threads are smooth as glass causing no wear on the wooden threads in the shaft. The tap cuts smooth and clean and is extremely accurate if the work is accomplished properly. They are the best value I know of in cuemaking. It just does not get any better.

The additional cost of the pin is easily offset by the ease in which it is installed and there are 4 versions; Stainless Steel, Brass, Aluminum and Titanium to help with the balance and weight of the cue.

Good Cuemaking,

Hate to say this but you might have just tried soft-hitting cues which HAPPEN to have radial pins.
Your hand cannot tell what kind of 3/8 pin configuration the cue has.
Arnie, ball screws come in G10 now too.

Makes Sense

That does make sense Joey and if I hadn't noticed that the 3 radial pin cues I do play with or have access to hit noticeably softer I wouldn't have thought a thing about it. I have always thought and been told that hit and feel is created by many things of which the joint is not a factor, unless maybe its SS 5/16.

Hmmm yummy a G10 Radial Pin (what I want on my first custom cue, If I ever get the money :o )

Good Cuemaking,

That is what I've noticed in reading various posts/threads/etc.

My personal feeling is that the hit does seem a little softer than a SS piloted joint, or 3/8-10 SS pin!? Yet, if you put an ivory joint next to the radial pin that seems to definitely change the feel some and, then of course the ferrule tip combo will have something to say about the overall hit too  :) ;)

I need to learn how to install the radial pin....it's my favorite at the moment -- but, it's really a personal preference IMHO
:D

I have the first cue that Dave Jones made with a radial pin... it may have been his last cue made in 2003 (late October hand-off to me). After test-hitting my cue, Davy told me that all of his cues from mine on would be made with radial pins.

Mr. J's cue (the ebony/ivory/malachite masterpiece shown in Blue Book #3 pictures) has the titanium version.
