Randy Brown / Clearwater florida

When I first worked at Family Billiards they still had a keg for draft beer. Randy was a fixture at the end of the bar having a few while trying to sneak up on someone for a few bucks. The thing I remeber most is every time I went to walk the room or go to the bathroom his cup would be empty, but when I returned it was always full. He was a sneaky SOB.

Not sure who you are, but we know each other if you worked there for more than a few days. I won't comment on Randy's, umm... behavior, in that respect. Suffice to say "Been there, done that." for me as far as he was concerned.

You're thinking of Tommy Brown, he and Ditoro were close in the late 80's and he had one eye, and also ran a poolroom in Daytona for 20+ years.

He passed several years ago as well, I worked for him in the pool room for many years in the 90's.

I'm so dumb! Now I'm not sure who Randy Brown is. I kind of remember him as a top money player in Florida back in the 70's when he was just a kid. I don't think I ever saw him play. Little David told me about him.

Jay - Billy Johnson ( W.C. ) took him out for @ 2 years when he was 18 and 19 ( @ 69 - 70 ). Wade told me decades later at a tournament at C.M. Lee's that Randy made more money for him than any other player he ever traveled with. Little David knew him very well, they came up together, age-wise.

At another tournament at Baker's, We were sweating a match between Detroit Whitey and Miami Shorty. If you knew Shorty, or ever saw him play you know he wasn't the most talkative player, to say the least. He sometimes would go hours and never say a word. A the beginning of the match, both he and Whitey missed more than a few balls. After Shorty missed yet again, Whitey gets up to shoot and says to Shorty, "Damn, Shorty, neither one of us can make a ball!" Shorty didn't say anything, but Randy pipes up from the crowd and, looking at Whitey, said, "Shorty says speak for yourself." Shorty responds with "Yeah...". And that was all he said the entire match.

Mike, how many guys who have worked there went to FSU, or even college? If you can't piece this one together I may have you Baker Acted, you know, since my wife is a clinical psychologist....even Donny might be able to figure this one out.

Z,

I received my official "Welcome to the American Association of Alzheimer Patients" introductory kit in the mail a few years ago. I would go find it and tell you exactly what it said, but I can't remember where I put it.

You got me, mon frere... I have no idea. ( Yeah, Donny. How bout that? I started going in Family in the summer of 67. He grew up seeing me in the pool room, seen me a thousand times and he doesn't even know who I am. I'm like... damn, Donny ) :)

...
He showed me ( at a tournament in Tampa @ 77 or so ) what was, hands down, NO COMPETITION, the *best* bank I've ever seen. Or even imagined. And I remember the shot like it was yesterday, probably because I set it up, exactly as he showed me, at *least* a thousand times over the next few weeks and I never came CLOSE to making it. I've showed it to people over all these years and NO ONE believes me. He froze a ball on the side rail diamond closet to the bottom left corner, set a ball right in the jaws of the bottom right corner, cueball halfway between the side rails a foot or so below the head string, **FIRED** the cueball into the ball frozen on the diamond, cueball stays EXACTLY where the frozen ball was ( except it's @ 1/1000 " off the rail ), spinning a zillion MPH, frozen ball goes 4 rails, comes back, clips the cueball, cueball goes 4 rails and makes the ball hanging in the jaws. ...
I don't quite understand the setup. Is this it? What rails does the object ball hit? Then which for the cue ball? Thanks.

Bob -

Object ball goes A, C, D, F, into the cueball, Cue goes A, C, D, E then makes the 9 ( so, technically, it's 5 rails but I don't count F to start as the ob is frozen ).

And if you don't believe it, trust me on this, you're in a LONG line! :D

I've seen too many impossible shots made to say it can't be made, but if someone perfects it, I'll pay to see.

Frankly, and I mean this, I didn't believe it when I actually saw it. It was* the 70s and I *was* young, so... yeah. I was "under the influence", and it wasn't alcohol. So when he made it, I was, ummmm... did I just *see* that? Rusty said he'd taken 50 shots at it for 300 the night before and went off. So then he makes it on the 2nd try. Just mind-boggling, really. I've had **GOOD** players say, adamantly, "No way, can't be made." Well, yes. It can. I saw it. Up close and personal.

Hey Bob -

I see you're from Berkeley. No idea how long you've been there but when I was at Ft Ord ( Monterey ) in 72, I played every night with a black kid from Oakland and got to know him really well though I can't for the life of me recall his name. He would've been 18 or 19 at the time and he PLAYED. He said his nickname in the Oakland / Bay Area rooms was "the Run-out Kid". I've thought about him through all these years, wondering what ever happened to him. He was a strong player back then. I'm sure if he kept up, he only got stronger. Ring any bells by chance?

Maybe Billy Palmer.

Not FU- I don't think he ever worked there. I worked for Eric during the summers when I was home and not working on the charter boats. You're gonna hate yourself.
