It's no coincidence that most hustlers are a**holes. Nobody wants to take money from someone they like. But the cocky a**hole on the front table laughing and yelling out loud as he makes the 9 ball gets action for days from anybody he wants.

The more he wins, the more obnoxious he becomes. The more obnoxious he becomes, the more opponents want to beat him. The more opponents he has to choose from, the better game he can negotiate. The better game he can negotiate, the more he wins. The more he wins, the more obnoxious he becomes...and it repeats.

I guess there's no question anymore as to why there are so many a**holes in the pool world. There is one in my area who plays really well. He usually gets drunk on wild turkey for 10 hours straight during tournaments and then challenges all of these low A players to a race for $300 - $500. He'll offer them the last 4 or 5 in barbox 9-ball. He almost always ends up winning. I don't know how he keeps out running the spot or playing so well while intoxicated but it's pretty damn incredible. And he is the biggest A-hole there is. Nobody likes him, and he likes it that way!

I think I figured out his trick. He offers up the last 4 or 5 to the people who always get out with the last 4 or 5 anyways so it's not as big of a spot as it seems. It also keeps them from hitting as many balls so it's hard to find a rhythm or get in stroke when you're not at the table as much. Plus when you're getting that much weight you start to feel like you're much worse of a player and then you lose confidence. It also helps that plays late at night after everyone has been drinking and is exhausted from being at the tourney all day. This plays into his favor because he has developed a lot of endurance for playing under these late night exhausting conditions.

So anyways, next time you're wondering why someone has to be so annoying all the time remember that it pays to be hated. They are just making their money in the shady way that they must to continue their shady lifestyle. Don't get caught up in their trap!

In regards to the loudmouth a hole part; for sure this does happen quite a bit. HOWEVER, there is a flip side to that which needs to be considered. Quite often some of the best action ( not necessarily the best player but the best action - plenty of gamble and not afraid to lose ) are people that don't go for that and wants absolutely no parts of some loud mouth hood rat smack talking low class A-hole. They just want a good well mannered match, played as gentlemen. In fact if I play nowadays I really only have a handful of people that I will get down with. I know they have money and are not afraid to bet it up and win or lose they conduct themselves with class and are gentlemen. These type of folks IMHO are the only kind of people even worth gambling with. Generally they are educated, good job ( or own their own business and have disposable income ) , do not rely on winning a set to buy dinner or pay rent, and conduct themselves like they have some sense. For sure there ARE PLENTY of the type people like you mentioned around but when they ask to play I just say " NO THANK YOU " and of course the BS comes next - why?why? How come? Why? I just politely tell them no thanks a second time and after that I just ignore them. There are quite a few people that feel exactly as I do as far as matching up, part of that is due to the fact that they know if they lose they will be dropping some coin and want to know that they at least have a chance at winning something in the future. Think about it, most of the time these A-hole guys might beat you out $1000 or whatever on Friday night, then you play them on Saturday win $50 bucks and they quit lol. How many times have we all seen that? NO THANKS!

I dont know what area you are in, but I've hustled pool since 1967, and the loudmouth "hard hustle' usually only works once on the same guy. The next time
loudmouth asks to play, the guy will get the nutz or wont play. Now, being in a bar,
booze can make everyone 'pool stupid', which sounds like what is happening here.
Also, loudmouth may be 'puttin on the drunk', which make him look like an easy
mark to 'non-pool smart' people. In over 45 years in pool rooms and bars, I've seen very very few players that can play drunk ( Keith McCready and Eugene Browning
come to mind......and they could REALLY PLAY! ).
The 'soft hustle' ( get people to like you just enough to gamble with you ) works most of the time and will get you more repeat action and win you more money per session then the loudmouth.
Your situation is somewhat unique. You seem to have just the right amount of greedy
players, along with players that are not 'pool smart', and definitely dont know how to hustle. You have a few choices; import a player to 'lay down the lemon' and bust this guy ( this could take some time ), or...stop people from playing him ( tough to do with
'non-pool smart' players ).
Good luck

I agree with below. I certainly enjoy gambling (and will bet a healthy amount) but will under no circumstance play someone who is loud, drunk, disrespectful, etc....even if I know it's a lock.

The gambler mentioned in the op's post would get NO ACTION from me. And that would go for most of the loudmouth action hunters at Derby City. Even as a spectator, I get no enjoyment out of watching that sort of spectacle.

By the way, Kid Delicious was a super hustler, in part because he was so damn friendly and nice, that people did not mind handing over the cash.

There seems to be a few of this type of player in every town.

When asked to play, I refuse. Then, they go around town telling everyone I'm scared of them which I could care less about.

Years ago, there was a young up and coming player. As his game improved, so did his loud mouth. He, also, had a reputation of stiffing other players when he ocassionally lost.

One day, he set his sights on me. Again, after I refused to play, he ran his jaws to anyone that I was scared to play him.

After about a week of his jaw flappin', I asked him to show me something I could win. That shut him up for a while as I knew he rarely had over $50 of him.

One day, he walked in and threw what appeared to be a couple of hundred dollars on the bar in front of me. I said OK and we headed off toward the table. Halfway there, he mumbled something at me. I said "Excuse me?" He whispered if we were going to play for that much, he needed the 7 ball from me!

I stopped, cracked up laughing, turned and headed back to the bar. Never did play him and a couple of months later, I barred him because he started stiffing everyone.

Stones< would rather have a root canal than play those kind of people.

I grew up in a pool hall so I guess I'm used to those guys.
No offense but I have to question your story, because you have such low tolerance for people in general.
In your world, anyone that doesn't act the way you think they should act is an a-hole.
You would be a trip as an APA team captain...holy crap, everybody is an a-hole.

There is a certain level of player that is strong enough that when they offer weight it is "bait". For a lot of people an asshole like that really gets 'em riled up to try and shut him up! Haha seen it a few times before myself.

Frankly I am a low key guy and hate being around loud ass people like that in any setting, pool hall or otherwise. I just want to handle my business and go on about my day:smile:

I never play anyone who is obviously obnoxious.
When I am playing someone who become obnoxious after we start, I quit mid-game and walk out.

If dude is beating guys giving the last 4 and he's blind drunk ,then he's unbeatable. Never try to beat a drunken wizard....

There's an old phrase that goes something like this....

"If you run into an asshole in the morning, well, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day long........ you ARE the asshole...... "

Not sure if it applies here, but something to think about anyways.......

Someone above mentioned Eugene Browning, I ran into him in bar in Houston about 15 years ago .... several things worth mentioning ......

1) I didn't know who he was at the time.
2) He was really drunk.
3) He was funny but not obnoxious at all.
4) He offered me a spot for a reasonable sum of money on a bar box and I thought I would like it.
5) I didn't like it.

What was the spot and how long was the race or ahead set?

Life is too short to sniff around assholes.

Really great players can afford to be gentlemen pool players.

Last time I was around Real Players Gambling for Real Cash, it was three of the coolest customers and true gentlemen pool players I've ever met, all playing One Pocket. There was Sylver Ochoa playing for funsies at $50 a game, later more serious at $500 per; also an old friend of mine near his retirement years, having lost a couple hundred to Sylver, he had the good sense to decline when Sylver politely asked to did he want to up the bet. This was about the time when Sylver was winning 1-P all across the country against the best. The third gentleman player was the great Billy Incardona, who could care less about the amount of the bet, only wanting a fair chance to win, and never put forth anything but his best effort, and never a had a bad word to say about anyone.

I've seen the a-holes the OP speaks about, but they don't necessarily win all the time. A long time ago a Fort Worth lawyer loved to gamble on pool, and played okay, but he loved to get mad, talk bad, then go off like a rocket and storm out of the pool hall less whatever cash he came in with. You could set your clock by his antics. But he payed off to lots of pool players who did not have a lucrative law practice to fall back on.

Hustlers, gamblers and big money players are three distinct subspecies of pool players. Some have the rare ability to morph from one subspecies to another, but most don't...
