we dont ask top pros in other sports to gamble their own money
i wanna see top flight pool, not a top pro worried over shot selection that may cause his kids to miss meals

I think for me it would entirely depend if we were to know to high degree of certainty that the high dollar staked match was actually whatever it was advertised as, ( actually playing for the amount they say they are ).
As to your second part, I'd definitely rather see two Asians going at it, as long as both chic are hot

hard for your own, always. Some play hard when being staked some don't. Dean and
I once staked a well known player in Dallas where he had a good chance to take off
a big score and he played like a complete idiot. I had beaten the same guy, real good
about six months earlier with the same game. I had not hit a ball for 4 or 5 months so
we put this guy in. The first game our guy is a foot away from the 9 which is straight in
6 inches from the pocket, this screwball slams it in and draws the cue ball 8 ft back and
scratches in the other corner pocket. Then just kind of laughs it off. We never won a
game in that set. We pulled up after 1 set even though we should win but if this jerk off
isn't going to play hard for my money he can find someone else to stake him.

Bet your own all day. I wonder if most people on here know that in "most" exhibitions and even high stakes matches where both players are getting staked the two players often do a "saver" where player A calls player B and says hey buddy i,m gonna play hard for this 10 k my stakehorse is putting up but do you want to do a "1000 dollar saver" . In other words the two agree to "throw" the other player (usually about 10 percent) so that the loser at least gets something for playing. All the heart and grind is gone nowadays. And yes i personally know many,many instances of top players doing savers with each other and no i am not going to say who.my point is savers are only one step away from dumping in my book.( if i stake a player for 10,000 and he loses but did a saver with the other player,i go home 10,000 loser but my "buddy" goes home 1000 winner even though he lost.what happened to the good old days of getting in the car and hitting the road for a month or so and all the money in the car "played" . If you were traveling together everything is 50/50 wins ,losses,expenses,etc....(i always bet on the players who put there own money in play) they have more heart and grind and win more often than players who don,t. I actually know a top player from my area who was out with another friend of mine. They were having a couple beers when a stone cold sucker came in looking for action. My buddy(the one with the local player) says to the player "get up there and steal this money, i'll take half.the player said" man i will get up there and play,but i get staked to play,not put my money at risk" lol my buddy says" man i don,t have the money to stake the whole set"( the stranger wanted to bet 1000) the local player said"tell you what, i will LOAN you the money to stake me" you can,t make this sh-t up lol. My buddy took the loan from the player, told him he would stake it with him getting 65 percent,player getting 35 percent. The player agrees,gets up there and runs over the guy and wins the 1000. Heartless!!! I just grew up with heart and i bet my own .anybody that knows me will tell you the same and i just can,t relate to the kids today .always looking at the pecentages and tring to grind out a living and never taking any chance on making the big score. I am a "c" player at best,but i match up with all the better shortstops,good players, and champions too. They have to give up a lot of weight,but i bet my own,and take down all the money when i win. I don,t stake pool players anymore,it is a losing proposition.
Are you talking specifically about pros? If so then yeah I agree, they are always looking to get staked. Otherwise, we have quote a few guys round these parts that will throw up their own cheez in the thousands ( not pros obviously ).
I know what you mean about being staked and there being more pressure, however I can tell you that 99 percent of the the top pros get staked in everything. Especially in $20,000 and up sets. Most players don't have that kind of money and even if they did to play another guy one set of pool even if you are the favorite for all your money is dumb. I used to do it all the time bet my last $5,000 on super tough games. It wears on you and you can't keep winning. I would always bet my own and I still do I don't get stakes in tournaments anymore but if I'm gambling high I get staked.. But I think my gambling record is better than my tournament record. I usually only play like two or three really big events a year like U.S. Open (3) times, Derby 9 ball (4) times, and maybe another one. I always put myself in, I never understood how good players can get staked in a tournament becaus in the long run they are costing themselves money especially ones with tax but if you don't even it you don't have it.
I can also tell you that there is as much pressure playing for someone else's $20k as its your reputation and it's still your money if you lose your not getting anything and if you do lose it cost you getting staked again not only from your stake horse from other people. Also top players hate to lose that's what makes them too players... I think champions would rather win and take less money than lose and win a little more. I know I hate to lose.

The amount of money has less to do with it than actual dog fighting on the table. I think we all want to see a great match up and see them go at it.
If I can get in the action betting on the winner even better. Who care what they are making. I want some of that jelly too....

we used to go in together and split the bets
I can not tell you how much fun it was in those days
I never felt comfortable staking anybody else
jack potter was the best player and i was the worse,
but it was funny that i got more action
I remember poor ole Jack could not stand to watch me miss ball after ball
i usually ended up winning but Jack had no stomach for it
As far as preference for whether a guy got staked or played his own
I never cared one way or the other
I do prefer to play someone who is getting staked
for 2 reason
1 The guy getting staked must be a loser if after all his years of playing
and he still needs a stakehorse
and 2
Anybody who gives 2 to 1 on the money in a pool game must need a psychitrist
if he thinks that is a good bet
I love to play people who have a stake horse

Me, it doesn't matter about the amount, I just want to see a dog fight, never give up match. I know a couple of shorts stops, and they always bet their own. Granted it wasn't for $20K, but often it was $2-5K per set. These guys were an usual breed in they had their own businesses, and that is why they were able to bet their own dough. I used to love watching these guys match up with folks coming in out of town. Ah the good ole days.
