Ray Martin/ Grady Mathews 14.1 video

Thank you for posting this and all the other great straight pool videos. I can't wait to see the next half of the match. Do you know anything about the equipment they were playing on? It looks like the pockets were really playing tough.

Here's part 2: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6919484956027868443

I don't know about the equipment but I know some of the new york guys could probably tell you about it. Or maybe Mr. Martin can tell us.

Dennis, thank you once again for the videos, priceless for those of us who love the game.

The table looks to be a Brunswick GC3 with early Simonis Cloth, (It has been improved over the years) and Centennial Balls, but I don't know if the CB's used in the tourney were Brunswick Blue Circle or the Aramith Red Circle, I imagine they would be the Blue Circle CB, perhaps someone could ellaborate on this?

The pocket width looked to be around the 4.5" mark :)

Great video Dennis, thank you very much buddy for taking the time to upload these vids, I know that I and certainly the rest of the SP fans here appreciate it :)

Lets all give Dennis some well deserved rep points :)

Willie

Thanks for looking. Good straight pool has been hard to find. But...that has been changing the last few years with Randy and Charlie Williams and others in NJ; TAR and that cool challenge match (please do another 400 point straight pool challenge), and the BCA 14.1 US Open, not to mention the proseletyzing of Blackjack, John Schmidt and Danny Harriman.

I just met Danny at the Windy City Open a few hours ago and got to chat with him a little before his nine ball match. Great guy. The snow chased me home.

I hope to have some more matches up next week that have rarely been seen. Have to convert them and then upload on my work computer which has a faster connection.

Later,

Howdy everybody, the table was a BRUNSWICK GOLDCROWN with 860 and tight pockets the table played slow and the balls did not open as well as they would have if the cloth played faster,i forgot the cue ball was a blue circle and centennial balls, and i think it was rainy outside.

great to see the straight pool videos ...as a long time player (who did not play for 30+ years ) i grew up in ray martins area of nj..(jersey city) and saw he and other greats or soon to be great players , margo, miz, colivita, and then young hoppy. it was a great time .....now that i have started playing again(breaktime in nc) i am known as a straightpool player. there are a few of us left .....most of the younger players have no idea how to play the game .thanks to my early 14.1 i am one of those 1 in 100 who can run more then 6 or 7 balls (ray martin quote from his book)...are there any videos of the 14.1 tournements from the commadore hotel in manhattan?

Ray:

It was good to see you guys are human too, and miss once in a while. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, stopped at the point where someone asks Grady what the score was. 104 to 78 I think, but you have the stick in your hands.

There was one secondary break shot in the second clip, off the bottom rail, at 33.10. You stroked it pretty good, looked like the cueball got airborne a little coming off the rail.

Looked like Grady was taking more chances, trying to make things happen.

From what I've seen of it, you rarely hit the cue ball with follow on the break shot, probably trying to avoid a scratch in the corner.

All I can say is that it's easy to see why Ray was the World Champion at 14.1 several times. What a beautiful stroke ! Would love to attend one of his clinics...Tom

Enjoyed the video yet again Dennis. Thanks again. Have you been 56 for a loooonnnng time? :D  ;)

Actually, it's the right number and will be replaced at the end of the summer.
