Re finish question

its nice to meet you mike. OK, i guess ill start with do you use sanding mandrels. using a ca finish i use mandrels to get my joint to match up. i also turn the size down about .010-.015 under my finish size. when using the epoxy and auto finish what sizes do you shoot for your final cuts. when do you install your pin. i put my pin in a few passes from finish so i get my cuts to run straight with the pin. what are some epoxies that you recommend to use as a base coat. how rough or smooth do you sand the epoxy before you spray auto on and then how thick or how many coats should bet put on. do you finish as usual from there, wet sand and then polish. i guess thats a decent start to this if there's anything you would like to add in that i missed or you think i should know please do so. thanks

Well Mr. Schrader
I sure got a few messages about this last post of yours.
I'm not looking for a student. Most important. I simply advised you how to approach Cue makers.
Nothing more and nothing less. So with that been said, it doesn't matter how I do anything.
What matters in this thread is do you think your qualified to refinish someone else's cue?
This is a refinish:

Is what you do, close to this kind of quality? Pictures outside, as they should be?

For your multiple questions. Start threads and the group will either help or not. There's a lot if what we call AZ Cue maker's who have obtained 95 percent of thier knowledge from this Forum. The other 5 percent. They bought thier equipment.
I sound harsh but I'm not.

Wow!
I just sprayed. Calling it a night . Finishing wipes me out.
But, might get a little better as I'm getting a separate compressor just for finishing. As if I have not spent enough money on this adventure.
SATA and IWATA guns = $700. I had two other cheaper ones. Chucked them.
Booth=$300
Filter for booth every session is $25. Crabon gets replaced after 5 sessions=$30
Water trap= boy, $$$
Let's not even talk about buffer, different paper, scotch brite, steel wool, compounds and polishes.
All that to freaking put a shine on wood. haha!
No wonder Brunswick just used French polish.
Most factories just use electrostatic finish . They are crap and they don't even hold. Sometimes blue tape peels them off after you re-wrap them.

How do you get messages if you don't accept pm's.

My world does not evolve around AZ billiards. I use to post my info in my sig. I'm not here for business, I removed it. I stopped coming here for years once. I came back because I was tired of seeing people with no clue at all destroying this Section. I couldn't really care less about this section but I like and respect Mike Howerton. But in time, I'll be gone again. I'm becoming an old man and just don't have the patience I use to have. Technical support is not teaching. It's not even close. It's trying to help, answer some questions with other questions to make people think.
End of story.

They have things called cel fones and email, and smoke signals. You are looking for short cuts that don't exist. There is nothing better than figuring something out on your own, Try something and if it works then keep doing it, and if not tweak it a little. Talk to people that sell finishes, or you can buy the info from members here.
Don't badger my illegimate son until you run him off.
I would sell his # but it goes for a yard 75.

I'm not looking for short cuts. I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction for other finishes other than CA. If you had a choice would you rather spend countless hours and money trying to figure something out or ask someone for help to avoid that. I'm not afraid or ashamed to be asking you guys with far more knowledge than me for help or advice. Mr Webb in regards to your question of if I'm qualified to work on someone else's cue my Facebook page where I post all my work is Schrader Custom Cue's. Take a look and you tell me what you think the answer is. Im not on here to waste my time or others, im on here in this page to try to learn and advance my knowledge in this business and game I've spent my life involved with. I don't mean to sound rude or anything typing this. All I want is help learning.

Your page looks very good. Good jobs. Very impressive. You should still make it good practice to contact Cue makers cues you are asked to refinish. Its respectable and good business to inform them what you use for finish.
I wish you the best of luck.

One day I got a call in my business to do some work at a business called Duo Glide. This man painted Harleys and it cost 28 hun plus. He said very few people can get the detail and flames on a small surface like he can. That was for 2 fenders, a gas tank and bare frame.
I talked to him about cue sticks and he told me the best gun and paint to use, and then told me why. I never used anything else for 20 years. The people that sell automotive pain know their products very well. You need to be able to talk to the people in person and they can look at your work and tell you what wrong and how to fix it.

I will try to contact the makers. I still think it's a good idea. Maybe you'd be surprised that I've only been doing this about 3yrs now.

**Mandrells are very helpful. I like .008 to .010 max fir my sealing epoxy and finish.

when do you install your pin. i put my pin in a few passes from finish so i get my cuts to run straight with the pin.

** I install my joint screw last. Every time.

** I'm a West system epoxy guy. I studied it, learned about it's different hardners and additives. The only one of the family I do not use is the 5 minute epoxy. FOR ANYTHING.

The people that sell automotive pain(sic)

Made me spit tea into my keyboard :D

Used to paint cars and MC's when young almost 1/2 century ago.
Went to the product suppliers seminars, etc (before internet).
Did some epoxy, got out when urethanes and clear coat became prominent. Had enough other bio-hazards and enviro-toxins in my life.

Still spray some "bad" stuff for furniture but will stick to true french polish for few stcks i make, like the old guys. May limit sales, but other things (lackadaisical production) are a bigger factor, don't need a 4th or 5th career......

That auto painting world has changed imo.
About two years ago, a friend and I went to his cousin's autp painting shop.
I was gonna spray there b/c he had a nice booth. Hell, two of them.
I was gonna try his clear.
His shop was next to used car lot . The used car lot sent him a crazy amount of business. He would touch up the cars and spray and buff them in one day.
Turns out he was using Medallion clear. He's painted thousands of cars .
Medallion he used was just run of the mill clear.
Not exactly Dupont or PPG or Siemen .
