Reason for “expensive “ chalk

I doubt SVB changes anytime soon unless one of the other chalk brands pays him a lot of money. He has won all his titles with Masters and is used to the feel. He is a creature of habit and went away from his ghost cue and back to his white cue because he said it is what he won all his titles with. Being comfortable is really important and I get it. I assume a LOT of the issue is the shape of the chalk. I have the same issue, cannot get used to holding or using a round shaped chalk. I use Taom Pyro at home because it is way cleaner on the equipment, but when I am playing in tournaments I find that i play better with Masters. The square shape has been engraved in our minds in the USA since we started playing pool and I assume there are many out there that have the same issue. Wish Taom would come out with a squared version. I understand the concept of a round chalk so it wears evenly, but it just feels weird.

It took me a couple of days to get used to the round shape of Taom.

The first shot I used it and put it down the chalk rolled off the rail and I didn't really think anything of it. The next shot it rolled off the table again and I was like "Damn, am I that careless?" The third shot I got it and laughed. It just takes a slightly different hand motion than for a cube and now I don't even think about it.

I think most are more of a creature of habit and don't adjust as quickly. For me, it's more how it feels in the hand while chalking. Played many many hours with the Taom and still can't adjust. But I am kind of messed up in the head a little and a little superstitious.

has any one found that if you dont chalk every time sometimes the tip gets alittle shiny and doesnt seem to "grab" the cue ball the way you expect with the v10
I only chalk one time between games and haven’t noticed

Taom is great for playing cues but not so good for break/jump cues. Is there a chalk that’s less messy than Master that works well on phenolic tips?

All the premium chalks I tested, including Taom V10, apply well to the phenolic tips on my jump and break cue (unlike with the earlier Taom chalks).

Has anyone noticed if the newer ball resin formulas have increased/decreased skids at all?
This has been my thought since watching the SVB final this past weekend. I’ve watched him play lots of pool recently; and, he’s been playing lots of pool for decades now. The only thing I can think of as “not normal” equipment in the 8 ball final was the Predator balls. Everyone is blaming the chalk…what if it’s the balls? Maybe the Masters chalk and the resin in the Predator balls is a bad combo. I can’t believe SVB would still be using Masters if it had that high of probability for skids with Aramith balls. Just a thought.

I don´t think that affects really. I am more prone to think reason is there how and if they cleaned balls. What wax or similar used..
Also if weather is very damp and high humidity ALL balls get sticky and will skid easier than dry weather. I believe that is most likely the reason. Masters really stick on balls on damp weather. Even Taom can leave little marks with high humidity especially when it is also hot like in rain forest.

Not disagreeing with you, but how do they deal with it in the Philippines? I'm thinking I heard, on this site, that they use Masters almost exclusively down there. I don't think they are big users of Predator Balls there either.

I heard from Markus Juva about 20 years ago when he was there year or 2 playing that they don't have much skids. He was guessing it have to do with talcum powder that everyone uses there. Also matches there they have racker who often use rag to wipe balls between games and another guy who wipes cueball.

Did any of you happen to hear the conversation albin ouschan had about chalk use. Svb had a few skids in the finals and one cost him a game. The other gentlemen commented he saw svb have three in another match he did. Albin said he never has skids anymore since not using masters (said he hadn’t used masters since he was 17 lol) and considering svb was one of the only pros left using masters and no one else is having problems with balls skidding the masters chalk is the common denominator. 🤷‍♂️ just food for thought I guess. Again use whatever you like but it’s just a view I didn’t have about it before hearing that.
Oh and I don’t think it’s expensive. As I’ve stated before all the money we blow on silly stuff in life $20 for a piece of chalk that lasts me about 18 months is the least of my financial worries. The fact that we pay 1000s for a cue or leather case to carry it but complain about a $20 piece of chalk is ridiculous lol

Also I know I’m gonna get the well svb still won. yeah… he’s svb. You and I are not lol so any little edge or piece of confidence helps imo
I'm still using the same piece of Taom Pyro I bought over a year ago. Before that I used Magic and before that Masters. I get miscues with all of them, and every time it's the fault of my stroke, not the chalk. Taom is cleaner than the others, and I don't like my tables cloth littered with chalk marks. If you chalk before each shot, Taom is the cleanest and for me that's the reason I use it.

I’m in New Orleans. We know a little about humid and hot. Masters is the standard. I have switched to V10 primarily to reduce the amount of weekly table maintenance. I do notice much more chalk powder/residue/dust on the balls when using Masters. Can’t see myself going back.

All I've used is Masters for 30+ years. Maybe SVB has a sponsorship w/ Masters? Maybe skids are more prolific on NEW cloth?

I never got miscues with kamui. Just a dark blue cotton shirt when I cleaned it once a week lol

With Dr.Dave's recent video their isn't much diffirence between Master chalk and more expensive chalk. The only real benefit is probably that you don't have to clean the table as often with more expensive chalk and really how are you going to measure how dirty a table is after hours of use.

Besides being a little cleaner for the only real benefit i see with expensive chalk is more of a mental thing. I'm more of a habitual non chalker between shots I feel more comfortable now not chalking between shots.

Beside DD video the other day on chalk, i've seen a few others with the same topic and you might get one or two extra hits on more expensive chalk

Minor ones but some laminated tips reveal more glue between layers than others and when shaped.
Taom seem to be work some kind "burning" effect on softer surface. When it hits to hard spot on glue between layers, it can miscue easier.

I've noticed the exact same thing on laminated tips. I'm mostly a Triangle or Elk Master user so I don't have to worry about it but the glue in laminated tips and Taom, both Pyro and V10, don't seem to get along. Oddest thing.

Now would be an excellent time for Taom to go to SVB and cut a deal. If SVB switched to Taom after all those skids in his match, and Taom made it known that SVB switched for that reason. Be a hell of a marketing play…

From what I've heard, all unconfirmed, they've tried and tried again.
He's a Master's chalk user and will probably not change any time soon.
Probably doesn't want any more endorsements now that he's doing Rasson too.

Unfortunately, until very recently, it has been tough to find a good tip and shaft person in the Seattle area.
I don't live in Seattle but I learned to install my own tips because of the same situation.
Get a few cheap tips and practice on those.
It'll be worth it.

Many people like the cleaner nature of the new premium chalks, and they also last longer. But the most important advantage (for top players anyway) is the lower frequency of cling/skid/kick. For more info, see the video:
