Hi guys,

my name is Steffen, I`m from Germany and have been playing pool (only for fun) for several years twince a week. Because nearly everybody is an expert in your forum, I was wondering if you please could help me with a little problem.

I think now it is time to have my personal custom cue built in the US. Till today, I only have owned and played some Pechauer and Schon cues. Im looking for a reasonable cuemaker in the US to built me a cue.
Not too fancy, not a Sneaky Pete. The only important things: There has to be a ivory joint, ivory butt cap (I do not like any phenolic or delrin butt caps) and ivory ferrule and a lizard wrap or something made out of real leather. Because I like the solid hit of the Pechauer and Schon cues, the new custom cue should have a "same or better hit". The new custom should not be only a collectors piece, I will use it. Because I`m not familiar with any custom cues, I was wondering if you please could help me.

I am willing to spend up to US$ 1000. I know, for 1000 bucks I will not receive a GINA or another cue from the top of the US cuemakers.

Thank you very much for your answer.

Take care and best regards from Germany

That's going to be a little rough to get what you want for $1000. The options you want are pretty expensive:

Ivory Joint: $250+
Ivory Ferrule: $75 each
Lizard Wrap: $200+ (leather wrap: $100)
Ivory Buttcap: $250-400+ (Depending on size)

Just in options you're looking at nearly $700-800 as a best case scenario, at least from cues I've priced from various makers. I think Andy Gilbert might be able to come close to that price though. His number is 1-417-743-2759. Good luck with your first custom! It's an exciting thing to get a cue made just for you!! :)

Gee...you're not asking for much, are you? I don't know if you got the lowest end Schon or Pechaur, but after International shipping costs that have to be added to the price, you couldn't have paid much less that $1,000 for either one of those with none of the ivory throughout nor a lizard wrap.

If you are interested, I have a Pete Omen players cue (solid, but highly figured cocobolo forearm and butt) with rings at A,B,C,D,and E. It has no points or inlays but the figure on the cocobolo is more than enough to entertain the eye. It also has a solid ivory joint w/ a 3/8x11 brass pin, and a solid ivory buttcap. Two shafts: one w/ approx. 3 hours worth of play and one that has only been test hit both with ivory ferrules and layered Talisman tips.

The cue is brand new. If you are interested, I will sell it for what I paid for it $1000. (The cue retails for $1200 because of the ivory and the rings)

As well, check out Andy Gilbert. I don't know how he does it but he manages to make a great playing cue with a good deal of ivory in it for a very inexpensive price.

Steffen ...

Known throughout all of the Midwest is Shurtz cues. 95% of all of the top players from this area, plus Oklahoma, Texas, and many places play with Shurtz cues. Bob Owen, partner and cuemaker, makes the cues. He is the father of Gabe Owen, the U.S. Open 9 ball champion. Bob and Gabe are personal friends of mine, so I can personally vouch for them. Jack Shurtz was a student of Verl Horn, who use to make cues in Oklahoma and had a widespread reputation for cuemaking. Shurtz Custom Cues is located in Wichita, Ks., USA. Their website is www.Shurtzcue.com (but I have to tell you, their best cues are not on the website). Their phone number is
(316) 269-3844, and ask for Bob Owen. You should get a very nice cue for $1,000, and they make break/jump cues too.

Pharoh's Pete Omen sounds like a deal...I've heard they're a great player's cue and has everything you're looking for.

Because you are asking for Elephant Ivory in your cue, you are asking for trouble. Be aware it is illegal to export Ivory from the USA and the cue could get confiscated by Game and Fish. You might want to talk to Euro West or another cuemaker in Germany that can build the cue legally for you.

Trouble is right. I spoke to an agent with the Federal Game and Fish organization recently and got an ear full of knowledge. The only way that it is legal to export Elephant Ivory from the US is if it is over 100 years old and you have documentation proving that. A permit is also needed but I can imagine finding 100 year old ivory with the proper documentation to go with it would be almost impossible to find. Just a guess though. Mammoth ivory is a different story because it is from an extinct animal and therefore it is not regulated.

It is also my understanding that if someone visits the US and buys a cue and takes it back with them it is viewed as their personal property and generally not a problem. However I think there are a few countries out there that take exception to that as well. Not quite sure exactly which ones they are.

I have had people contact me from Japan that have bought a cue of mine there with Ivory in it. It was bought from me here at a show by the person they bought it from. It does seem many countries don't care when the cues are being brought in with their luggage. But if you ship it, game and fish here may grab it before it gets delivered. I am told they look for high value cues going either direction and request UPS or Fed Ex send it to them in Alaska for them to inspect.
