Recently got a number of used cues, wanted to get opinions

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a pool table and it came with a bunch of cues. All of them seem to be in good condition, only about half have even been chalked. I wanted to get your opinions on which ones are worth keeping - I'm no championship player, but I would like to have the best quality possible at a reasonable price. I got simonis felt for my table, to give you an idea of what I have currently.

The pool cues I currently have are:
Supreme™ The 57" One Piece Supreme -15, 17, 18, 19 oz

Viper 1-Piece Medium Pool Cue

Dufferin One Piece Hi-Run House Pool Cue 18 oz

Which ones are worth keeping, and which are garbage? Also, is there any way to tell what tip is currently on there without removing it? should I be reshaping the tips or anything like that? I'm fairly new to the pool owner world so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

welcome to the forum. there are a lot of guys on here that have a wealth of information to share, you just gotta wade through the bs in the whats the best cue, best tip, best chalk etc, etc threads.

by your line of questions i gather you are very new to pool.

most people on here would say the list of cues you mentioned are all garbage. they all in fact are very inexpensive cues, but i say they are adequate for a beginer playing at home... as long as they are straight and have a decent tip on them.

the easiest way to check if a cue is straight is to simply roll it on the table. there are other methods to check straightness but that method will suffice for the cues you have at home. just be sure to give your opponent the most warped one when you are playing him:grin:

as for the tips....it just depends on what kind of shape they are in. the best advice i can give you on here is to visit a billiard supply store or a pool hall that replaces tips and have them show you how to shape, when to shape and when to scuff a tip. the less you mess with a tip the longer it will last.

welcome to the pool world but be careful of the pool bug, when it bites you will start visiting pool halls, buying a 2 piece cue cause you cant carry a 1 piece very easily.

then you need a case, , shaper, tip pick, etc etc etc. :grin-square:

The Supreme cues I suspect are Valley Supreme. These are quite good house cues generally. The Dufferin is as well. These cues are not infrequently used as blanks by cue makers in fact.

The best way to tell how good they are is simply to play with them. Then you can decide.

thank you all for your replies! seems like what i have will work for most people. im sure there are many threads on getting a good professional starter stick, but any quick reecommendations?

You can't beat "Players" cues, if you are looking for an entry level cue.
"Lucasi" cues are also nice.
