Record breaking Nike sneaker sparks competitive advantage debate

This article is about new "hi-tech" shoes and setting records, but it parallels what is happening in pool so I'm posting it in the Main Forum.

Carbon fiber shafts, jump cues, changing of the rules, etc.

A quote from the article:

“The challenge is striking a balance between spurring development of ‘new technologies’ while preserving ‘the fundamental characteristics of the sport’,” the association said in a statement, according to Reuters.

At what point is "pool" no longer "pool"?

The entire “debate” sounds like viral marketing from Nike.

Is it okay if I stick with a plain maple shaft? Or, will it soon become against the rules to do so?

Times, and technology, change. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle. You still have to make balls, have speed control, think, have patience, etc. The best player will still win if he has to use a house cue.

Much "unlike" Predator, huh?

Yes, Predator has done great job marketing their product. But I didn’t see them drumming up fake controversy about whether it should be allowed or banned in tournaments.

I think a better parallel in pool would be the marketing around 25+ oz. break sticks.

You say that NOW, but who is to say that isn't subject to change?

Will there be a new cue that you just line up and push a button for the shaft to hit the ball, instead of having to stroke? There have been many made in the past, but they were rudimentary. With today's technology they can be made and used with laser pointers and spatial recognition that will determine the length between the cue ball and the object ball and you just "dial in" the speed.

If that became available, I'm sure that lots of players would advocate it being legal. Same people who couldn't kick and advocated jump cues.

Whatever man. You're waaay overthinking, worrying about this. Who knows what lies ahead. Why sweat it??? You really think those things mentioned will be around ANY time soon? I seriously doubt it, if ever.

I don't worry about anything.

I play pool.

I don't need gizmo gadgets.

Are the shoes available to all competitors? If yes, there is no unfair advantage.

Speedo went through this snivelfest with their LZR swimsuits. The crybabies called it technological doping.
Rules were changed, changed back and changed again.

In the end it doesn't matter. Buy the shoes or STFU.

No CF shafts in the final 4. But, I still think CF is the future!

I have both...carbon and wood...and switch between them just to keep them from collecting cobwebs.

I think carbon will eventually overtake wood, especially when good wood becomes really scarce and carbon shafts get cheaper.

American running professional Ryan Hall came out with a FB post talking about unfair equipment advantages in relation to the record breaking time, and things went from there.
I am a pool player and I have completed a Marathon. Ironically the shoes I run in, Spiras are disqualified from marathon prize money because they have special springs in them (not coils). Those Kenyans just light it up.

My Converse Chuck Taylor's are not allowed either.

Because I wear them, pushing down the gas pedal, in the car I'm driving.

Who in the hell wants to run 26.2 miles?

Yes Carbon Fiber is the future and the future is now.

Easily made any length, any weight, adjustable weight from front to back

and they hit so good it's like cheating. Easy to pocket balls and get position.

And the big surprise is cheap to make. The Unknown Maker shaft will be coming out to a little town near you soon.

Carbon shaft industry is in for a big change....

.

There is nothing all that revolutionary about a carbon fiber reinforced composite shaft pool cue. It's not like a golf shaft where it changes how far every player can hit the ball.

We stand still, lean on a table and bend our elbows...its not an athletic activity.
