Well I've done it now. I've agreed to recover a couple valleys for the vfw. I've worked for someone else last fall setting up regular tables but this will be my first glue job. I bought the Penguin amusement DVD on fixing rails and I can handle that. And I've checked out the Dynamo table video on You tube. But what I don't see is any insight into stretching procedures for good cloth. If there are any DVD's that I can purchase I would be glad to invest in the knowledge rather than ask you for a freebee and please don't tell me I'm taking money from someone else, I'm attempting to become that someone else. Gotta start somewhere. Thanks Don

The Simonis install DVD is done but don't know when it will be available for purchase.
You can check by calling 800-simonis and talk to Felice (X 21)

This the stuff?

Something else just occurred to me after watching that video. the diamond slate looks to have some backing. The valleys don't and I'm wondering if I should roll the bottom and tuck the cloth under or is the edge good enough? Don

Do the very best you can and that will be good enough. I have played pool at a VFW before and everybody is usually smashed while playing. They won't be able to tell a good job from a bad job....Just kidding...:)

Just the edge.

I should have added - fold & glue underneath in the 6 pockets.
The rest trim flush with bottom of the slate.

Couple quick questions:

  • If the felt needs to be re-stretched does the adhesive / glue let it go or does it ruin the felt when you pull it? i.e. is the contact adhesive made to release fairly easily?

  • When putting new felt on a previously glued slate how do you clean the old glue / adhesive off?

The cloth will release from the slate with out damaging it. Be carefull when pulling the cloth off from close to the pockets, and the "fingers" under the slate as they can rip.

If replacing the cloth and using the same glue, the slate does not need to be cleaned unless there is a thick build up from many previous recovers. If spray 77 was used before and you are switching to 3M-10 then the slate can be cleaned off with a sharp scraper, or 3M also makes a citrus based cleaner that works really well.

Don't forget' if you cut the cloth off flush with the bottom of the bar table slate remove the pieces of cloth in the middle of the aluminum cross supports

To remove the spray adhesive'-
I use a heavy duty razor with other tools to remove old spray glue'..most of the bar tables I recover have a load of spray glue built up on top, side and bottom of the slate...it all must go- I try not to use that adhesive remover to much' if not at all on slate.. Its a sticky mess when using a liquid remover for glue...I may do thing differnt than others but I get the results I'm after...

Here is a picture of part of the spray glue removal process +
The bottom side of the slate was twice the mess
