red dot vs. black dot

One's whippy and the other is whippier. :D

Just kidding, I have no idea. I just didn't like the hit of a friends Meucci I tried out.

One is solid a whip the other is a laminated whip. Both are clocked by the dot to decrease the whip effect.  ;) :D

here is a shot....... I admit it

The red dots were the last of Bob Meuccis decent shaft wood supply, so he marked them with a red dot and claimed it was "new" technology. The black dot laminated shafts on the otherhand are cut from multiple economy grade fence posts and glued together with horse bone glue from the Meucci Appoloosa Ranch. They too are "new" technology, he figured out how to make shafts that warp easier than any others that came before them, while providing a wonderfully dull thud of a hit.
Bob Meucci used to make really nice playing cues.... The Originals from 1975 through the 95 series all were pretty well made..... after that who knows what happened.

the red dot was a mark on the shaft that was tested and showed you where the "spine" of the shaft was located. by shooting with the red dot up, you decreased deflection. i swallowed this crap and ordered one for $90-$100. i got it, chalked it up to hit a few and quickly realized the thing was warped. i griped to meucci and was told that since it was chalked, i couldn't return it. they kindly offered me a sale price of 60 bucks to buy another. no thanks.first and last time i did business with meucci.

yes, indeed the black dots are an absolute joke....bob retired and his son-in-law has been running things. i think he has come back within the past year to try to save the name. doesnt look bright, i used to work for a billiards retailer and we refused to buy meucci mainly b/c of the quality of inlays, shaft wood etc.

what's the difference between meucci's red dot and black dot shafts

thanks, jake

Jake there are many stories regarding the technology used to make Meucci Shafts.

The main difference between red and black dot shafts are that one is flat laminated and the other is a normal Maple shaft.

There are those who will tell you that the dot is placed to indicate the sweet spot of the shaft, others will tell you that the dots are used for aiming and still others will have additional opinions.

The common myth that the Red dot shaft is older than the Black dot shaft is not exactly true. Red dot shafts can still be purchased with any Meucci cue if you ask for them and I would suggest that you do.

The Black dot shaft is really a piece of crap however, they do not stay straight long term, they are very temperature sensitive, they are made from flat laminated strips of plywood, and they have never perfected the process for making them.

Do not be confused by laminated and spliced shafts like Predator Shafts, that are splice together in place of taking scraps of wood and pressing them together using heat and adhesives.

The spliced shafts are made using a number of pie shaped wedges and then it glued together and pressed.

Hope this helps Jake

Other than what were being mentioned, I believe the ferrule might have been installed a bit differently on the black dots.

Yea they used Elmers glue instead of Super Glue!

The worst thing you could do is buy a Meucci, seriously!!! walk away, give your money to someone else, and you'll save yourself the grief.

There is plenty of other GOOD production cues and Custom cues that you can get for the price of a Meucci Plunger!

PS someone needs to find that pic that a AZ'r had with the Meucci butt made into a Plunger and send it to this guy.

When did they start the Red Dot and Black Dot stuff? I have an old Meucci Sneaky Pete and it doesn't have either dot. I wanna say I bought it in about 1990. I like playing with it still but I may get something else down the road:)

A few years after Predator came out. So, I'd guess 1998.

The dot was marked at the center of spine on a deflection gage, if I recall correctly. The idea was that if you shot with the dot up, then that would be your best shot at left/right equality (if spine strength has anything to do with whatever you're looking for).

I purchased a red dot and black dot shaft. I can play with the red dot shaft, but the black dot shaft feels like a piece of petrified wood, gives you a stinger when you strike the cue ball. And I thought the black dot shaft was supposed to be better. What a pos.
