So, I'm curious how the pros refinish cues and get such a great mirror gloss thick coat of clear on it.

Would anyone be willing to share what actual product you use? Do you spray or brush it on? Or do you literally dip the stick in it?

I'll admit, I'm experimenting with refinishing an old/cheap sneaky pete, and I'm just not pleased with how it looks so far using a brush with high gloss polyurethane and a light sanding between coats. Maybe it just takes TONS of coats?
 
automotive clear coat is the best i have tried.after you paint it,wet sand,then buff,then polish.
 
I use PPG DC 3000 clear coat on my cues. I will say this its all in the prep work that makes a finish. A good seal coat before you spray in very important. I always spray 2 seperate times and I wet sand with 600 wet between coats.
 
If you're not set-up to do auto-clear or if you've never done it, don't.
You can't justify the expense and the health risks aren't cost effective either.

You may laugh at what I'm going to tell you but that's your choice. :killingme:
Krylon Acrylic clear, rattle can. :rolleyes:
Follow directions and don't get too carried away with the wet-sanding until you have sufficient build. You may have to lay on 10-12 coats but eventually, you'll get there.
One of the upsides is that, should you get a chip or whatever, you'll know what's on there and what to use to do the repair.
Your total cost for your refinish should be about $10 or less.

great advice here,though i use 800 grit instead of 600.i was turned on to this method by a friend and it really has been much easier since i started doing it.
 
I'd like to add to the excellent suggestions here: If you're down to bare wood on a pete and you're trying to learn, consider getting a bottle of Behlen's Woodturner's Finish or Myland's High Friction Polish. For a wrapless pete I like the feel of the lacquer type finish on my hand versus the automotive clear. Both of the aforementioned finishes are easy to work with.
