Refusing to adjust weight when you're ahead...bad form or not?

Hypothetical Scenario:

9-Ball
Race to 7
$200 Sets
You are getting the Wild 7 Ball

Game 1: Win 7-2
Game 2: Win 7-3

Now you're up $400 and the guy says he can't give up that much weight and he want's to adjust the spot in his favor. You tell him "The game is set, either quit or keep playing."

Is that bad form?
 
Of course it's bad form! The spot is wrong, it needs to change. You should be looking for a competitive game, not the quickest way to rob people. Unless that's your thing?
 
It's hard to say in 9 ball after only 2 sets. Obviously from the scores, it looks like the weight needs to be adjusted but if the guy is just dogging balls at the end of the rack, then he just needs to play better.
 
Finish the set, adjust next set. This gives the guy a chance to get his money back AFTER the fact.

That's how I feel. If the loser is hanging a 7 ball or 9 ball too often, he just needs to shoot better, if he's playing decent, then the spot needs to be adjusted. Also, did the person receiving the spot get lucky with some sloppy 7s or 9s. Hard to tell exactly what should happen without seeing how both players were shooting and knowing what they are capable of.
 
Do you know this guy? Is he playing his normal game? Let him walk away if he doesn't like the game. Next time you play adjust if he won't play you and give him a chance to win his money back. Are you guys friends, strangers? Too many variables in this scenario.
I am a solid B player and I play a guy who is a solid A player cheap sets a couple times a week. He gives me 3 on the wire in a race to 8 in 9 ball. We usually get three sets in and sometimes I win some money and sometimes I lose. If one of us continues to lose a few matches in a row we would adjust. We play very intensely but we are friends. All situations are different.

You sir are in a perfect situation! Best way to play, maintain, and get better all at the same time!

As far as the OP, absolutely adjust! That's how you keep your customers;) if your intentions are to rob, you will likely lose your customers unless you're an absolute sweetheart of a person and everyone loves handing you money:)
 
This is one of the reasons I don't care to gamble at pool. I have nothing against gambling at the game but I've seen players want to adjust in the middle of a set. It used to be, make the game and play. If you lose, then quit and make an adjustment the next time around.

To those that think adjusting is the correct answer, when do you quit adjusting? After the losing player is even? Until the scoring is closer? Why do you gamble? To make money? Or just to gamble and break even? What's the morality of gambling? (oxymoron)

I always get a kick out of players calling other nits when in reality they are trying to make a game that they can win. If the point is to just break even, then why gamble? Ok rant over.

Yes I am liakos. I always try to play better players and I like to have skin in the game to keep me sharp. My goal is to improve and get to the where I always get shape and never miss. LOL.

I don't gamble at pool anymore. Too much drama and cry babies.
If I want to gamble I do it at a Casino.
We have quite a few in Colorado. I can be at a black jack table in 45 minutes.
And if you win their money they smile at you and invite you back on another day.
 
Adjusting in the middle of a match for the most part is stupid.

Not to long ago I was up $150 and the guys crying he needs weight. I gave in and proceed to get beat. Turns out he was much better and I should have been the one that gets weight.
 
2 sets? You should adjust and make a fair game.

Then again, who cares. He gave you the spot. You robbed him. Take his money and PTFO.

In my experience, much of gambling between non top level players happens because one guy is talking that he is a big roller and can beat everyone and gets taken up on the challenge or two guys that have issues with each other try to beat the other guy. In those cases, not having an even game where the handicap should even out is a negative. Even if you win, you will never be a winner in the eyes of others because you had to win with a spot, and a spot that seems to be totally unfair to the other guy.

For someone just trying to make money and does not care about the actually beating that particular person, playing lob-sided is the way to go.
 
The big question is one you have to answer and that is "what's your motive"

1: Earn Money?
2: Get Better?
3: Entertainment?

i could drive to the pool hall 30 times and not get played and what fun would that be?

You must decide to set a goal of making a fair game and having a repeat customer to play.

vs.

Beating the man out of his money and never adjusting to end up at the pool hall like a leper week after week with no action.

the choice is yours!

Most people (read: pool players) confuse "gambling" and "stealing".

Your post refers to $200 sets and Game 1 and Game 2 with you up $400. So, those should be Set 1 and Set 2, correct?

If so it's reasonable to adjust after two sets.

I agree with you Sir. I come to the Pool hall to play, so I make games that I cant always win at, but I'm always in action.

I see guys come in that never play and they complain that they cant get action, that no one gambles, but these are the same guys that only play dead nut games and everybody knows it.

So if you like to play you might have to make a game that requires you to so your speed.

This is right on the money. It's all about what motivates you to play the game and put something on it.

I was playing a guy for ultra cheap one night (race to 3, 20 bucks) at the action room of a big tournament. It was about 2 am and it was clear he was no match for me and I was frankly getting tired and bored. I was up two sets. Wasn't going to try to jack the bet so I decided to quit and go to bed. The guy threw a tantrum calling me a nit and said I would never get a game again with anyone in that room! Over 40 bucks. Well sure I could have told him last set and played one more instead but I am mainly motivated by entertainment and I was no longer being entertained. I guess in pool there is no honorable time to quit other than stuck.

So since I am a somewhat known ability player I decided to test his claim before I left that I would never get action again so I loudly announced "$100 nine ball here, any players in this room"? It looked like the Oklahoma land rush for them to come get my money! I went to bed.

And such is pool. No honor, no dignity. Just fun to hit the balls and watch the brightly colored little buggers disappear.

To the OP:
If you are there to make money - don't adjust the spot
If you are there to play - adjust the spot

On the subject of gambling at casinos....casinos are the biggest nits in the world. All of the games are artificially biased in their favor, and if you come up with a way to sway the odds in your favor they call it 'cheating' and kick you out.
