Reminder Mosconi cup

Interesting shot. why bank the 8?

Now he's long banking the 9 and missed, left Kaci straight in.

Kaci wins 5-4

That really hurts - after being on the hill at 4-2. Strange that so many matches are ending with long banks on the 9-ball, either converted or missed. Wouldn't there be a safety opportunity available in those situations?

One thing is clear - it's very hard for me (or anyone) to figure out what is going on with these matches based on the commentary provided on here, and I'll have a far better understanding after watching the delayed videos of these matches.

It seems to me Chris is having a hard time with the shot clock (Corey too). There's been a couple shots where he's had to skip parts of his pre-shot routine and just quickly decide and get down and shoot something. I think that's what happened with him banking that 8 and putting the cue ball in no mans land.

Match 3 is singles, Klenti Kaci vs Match 1 hero Chris Robinson.

In Rack 1, Robinson made a truly remarkable two ball bridging out of the jaws of the corner pocket, but went wrong on the four ball and Kaci ran out form there for a 1-0 lead.

Kaci breaks dry in Rack 2 and Chris plays an exquisite safety on the one ball. Kaci makes a good hit on a jump shot, but leaves a shot. Chris makes a nice runout to tie the match at 1-1.

Robinson's miss on a tricky three ball proves costly in Rack 3, and Kaci runs out for a 2-1 lead.

Kaci's dry break in Rack 4 leave Chris a slight masse at the one which he pockets, but he misses the two in the side. Kaci, similarly, misses the two in the side. Chris misplays onto the four ball but makes a fine shot to set up a runout chance, which he completes impressively to tie the match 2-2.

Chris secured Rack 5 and Rack 6 with some sharp shooting to get to the hill. He has really caught a stroke, but let's see if he can close it out.

Rack 7 is run out by Kaci so the match sits at 4-3.

A brilliant carom off the two to make the nine by Kaci is the difference in Rack 8 and we're at double hill.

Robinson looks headed for victory but misplays onto the eight ball. He makes the bank but leaves a long, super-tough bank on the nine from a mile away and he can't pull it off, selling out the match. Shame, really, as Chris played well in this one.

Don't mean to be harsh here, as Chris played some very solid pool here, but I was taught many moons ago that a two way shot played without shape isn't a two way shot at all. I think that if Chris was willing to bank the eight, he should have been willing to play the shape and forego the defense. I think that if you're not prepared to play some shape, you should forgo the bank in favor of the straight safety. That said, I think the bank of the eight was the right choice played at the wrong speed.

Hell of a match and Team Europe now leads this Mosconi by 2-1. This match was the first one that featured world class play, and let's hope it's a sign of things to come.

No man's land? That cueball was on the edge of the earth lol

is the time clock shorter now? feels like it

Match 4 is doubles, with Woodward/Thorpe vs Shaw/Ouschan.

Often, when you see Sky and Billy on a stream table together, it's the finals of the Derby City Bank Pool Ring game, but this is a rather different spot.

A runout earns Woodward/Thorpe Rack 1 for a 1-0 lead.

Albin's safety on the one ball in rack 2 is a dandy. Skyler make a good hit, but Shaw plays a nice safety. Thorpe makes a good hit but sells out. The runout will require a five eight combo in which the shape will not be routine, but Albin hits it well, and Europe runs out for 1-1.

Europe's break and run in Rack 3 gives them a 2-1 lead in the match.

In Rack 4, Thorpe scratches on the break, and Team USA has nothing to do but watch while Europe runs out. Shaw/Ouschan.

This was a match in which Thorpe/Woodward really had no shot. Shaw/Ouschan were sensational. Europe 3 USA 1.

I stick to it...this year's setup plays strange.
The 6 ball Albin missed in game five just stopped dead. I have never seen something like that on a MC table.

I just checked out a replay of the shot. He overcut it and it rattled. He hit it bad. Nothing strange about it.

Of course it was a bad shot by Albin, but the 6 just stops. Rattling a shot is nothing unusual, but on such a fast table you have to slow roll a shot so that it sticks there after you hit the corner of the pocket. It also looks like the 6 rolls back into a small dent in the cloth.

Same is with Filler`s fluke in the teammatch. Such a curve on a new cloth?
Or Shane`s match losing 8 ball in the doubles, the white comes of the rail in a nearly 90° angle, despite it looks like he gave enough spin on the ball.

Regarding Shane’s accidentally running in to the 9-ball in the last game of the doubles match, although it shouldn’t have been a problem, Cory left him an unfavorable angle. If he’d have left it slightly straighter in, Shane could’ve easily just drawn back or if he’d had left slightly more angle, he could have played it with high inside going three cushions for the 9 in the same pocket.

When the 8-ball is absolutely frozen on the cushion which appeared it was can be a tricky shot trying to draw it, particularly on newly installed cloth. If you catch it just slightly rail first on the contact, the cue ball will rebound straight across the table, which appears to be exactly what happened, running in to the 8-ball. Cory was truly struggling the entire session, missing a number of easy shots, and in this case, leaving Shane a strange angle in what should’ve been a super routine runout.

Still, no excuse for Shane to run in to the 8-ball on that shot, which was a perfect example of a number of players on both teams having issues with the way this table was playing yesterday.

Several looked tight....nervous to me
It's funny how these sort of team events can do that. I've heard many a pro golfer feeling sick playing for the Ryder Cup. It's intense pressure to go to playing for a team, playing for your country.

Yep. Heck, even in a piddly little Scotch doubles tourney, I get more nervous about letting my partner down than anything. I can only imagine increasing that exponentially for this tourney. I am sure Sky feels terrible about the "no call" foul, and I bet CR feels terrible about letting his match get away from him.

Regarding CR, when it was looking for sure like he had the runout to win the match, Allison had literally just finished giving him a complement as to how proud she was of the way he was playing. Clearly she sharked/jinxed him, as the very next shot is when he made the fatal mistake, over shooting his routine shape from the 7-ball to the 8-ball - just kidding!
