Removing engraving from Derlin butt cap

I have a older Joss cue with a personalized name engraved into the top edge of the Derlin. Can this be removed? I plan on completely refinishing the cue. would that make it easier to remove the engraved name and have it look right?

Thanks in advance.

It's not a TS ingraved there is it? I almost made that mistake 30 years ago.

Is that the one on Ebay with the HUGE name engraved?

Unlikely to remove it I would think. If you send it to JOSS they might be able to help...but it likely would involve replacing the butt cap I would think, and losing the original hand engraved JOSS logo.

Personally, I would leave it alone.

If JOSS can't help then a restoration expert might be able too. Ryan or Scott would come to mind....they may have magical ways that I can't imagine....

To me that isn't a restoration though. The cue would not be returned to original, it would be modified, upgraded, improved. Not everybody feels that way though.

NOTE....you know they are "it" when you can just use their first names.

Delrin doesn't hold finish, so it probably doesn't have any finish on it anyway. Why not just have Joss or someone make a new buttcap to size? If anyone ever wants the OEM buttcap it could be put back on if care is taken with the repair process.

There is a nice thought. Just save the original. Usually it's just the weight bolt holding on a JOSS delrin butt cap anyway, comes right off no problem usually.

Did you see that box cue, pretty cool though. I do hate reserve pricing.
I have a plain jane 4 pointer with a name on it like that one.
If it couldn't be buffed out, you would think that the black pigment in the lettering be covered to lessen the visbility.
I once had a black plastic JP with an imprinted McDaniel logo that I filled with white paint to bring back the lettering, it worked fine. I just wiped the paint over it and rubbed off the excess on the flat surface. I may just do that and see what happens.

There have been several specatacular JOSS and Josswest cies on Ebay recently. The box cue was sweet.

I have often wondered if a really determined and talented person could actually imperceptibly fill engraving in delrin. I honestly don't know if it can be done.

Minimizing it for a cosmetic improvement might be a nice solution.

The probelm is the fact that it is delrin.... not much sticks to it for very long. That is why the buttcap is held on by the weight bolt. Finish and paint, and 98% of glues won't stick to it. Having another cap made is the best route, and just save the old one if you ever want to sell it as original.

The black inside of the engraving looks like an ink. Likely anything that could remove it would eat Derlin too. Grinding it off would leave a low spot. That's why covering it up makes sense. It'll figure out something.

The Joss cues I have seen on Ebay lately seem so undervalued. One went off in September with an Ivory joint and nice buttwork for about 1/2 what it would if it were a Josswest or Scruggs, and a third of what it would for a Gina. Dan Janes cues from 72-75 ish are just way undervalued. I would expect his Early cues to be worth more in 5-10 years.

JMHO, I think this is the way to go.

Don't remove it. It adds character to the cue & part of the cue's history!

In my opinion, by far the best option is to send the cue back to Danny Janes and have him replace the Butt-cap with an original. He will put the original, engraved joss back on and he isn't that expensive. Do it right instead of trying to half-ass the repair.

Indeed it shouldn't have finish. But I don't think it was implied that it did. I believe he is addressing this as a component of a refinish job.

As I stated earlier, I think it is best left as it is. But the idea of saving the original butt cap and having a new one put on is an interesting option. As long as the refinish does not screw with the original diameter it is certainly feasible that the original could be put back on at a later date as a restoration measure.

Certainly it's difficult to get anything to stick to delrin. I believe that is in great part the point of the material. Those types of materials were developed as bearing materials I think. That's why we see lots of small wheels and rollers made out of it. But I had a thought....can delrin itself be melted/molded? Could such an engraving be repaird by some process using delrin itself to fill in, perhaps using heat? Just a crazy thought....

IMHO - I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for those cues to go up
in relative value - there is a reason why the prices are what they are.
