I saw where the Sands Regency Reno Open will have a $15,000 first prize, (based on 256 players) with a $150 entry fee......because of this deal, I'm sure mostly "amateurs" will be participating.....I wonder if anyone knows what top pros are likely to show this year.....It used to be many top pros would attend, but not so many anymore.......Reno in December is cold and mostly snowy.....makes a a little inconvenient to make the trip, I guess....

Shane VanBoening is defending champion, I would think he will be back. Most of the top American players will be there.

Well it conflicts with the mosconi cup so those pros wont be there.....I think the reno open is awesome even though ive never been, its cheap there and the tourney has a good payout. I wanna go every year but something always comes up

Do they ever get 256 players to enter? Johnnyt

I think the most I can remember is like 230's but it should get 150 to 180 is my guess.

230 is a great turn out. But if they only get 150 entries what will the added drop down to? I know the promoters have to put some # on the flyer. But putting 256 when you know you never got that before is misleading the players and their backers IMO. I feel it would be better to put 10K based on 150 players and more will be added if more enter. Just think that as a player your expecting 10K added and more players than 150 show up. The players that cash will feel like they got a bonus and will look to play in that promoters events again. Johnnyt

Plus back when they got 230 entries, if im not mistaken I think the entry was $100 not $150.....so we will see how much the added will be.

Shane will not be there. It conflicts with the Mosconi Cup. Usually has around 200 players and the Added money stays the same no matter what the turnout.

That is great of the promoter to put up the added anyway. I don't like to see anyone lose money but it's the right thing to do. Too bad most cut the added with a bad turn-out. Thanks Jay. Johnnyt

all you have to do is look at the previous reno open payouts to see it pays out well, and i believe there is a calcutta, not sure if its included in the payouts or not

They have for years

The promoter is the Sands Casino in conjunction with the usppa. They probably always get that added back from the gambling losses of the players.
The added always stays the same, but the payouts lessen, mostly toward the bottom of the payout scale as they pay out 64 places no matter what. Just win two matches and you are in the money.

great room rates

It is always a great Tournament and I wouldn't miss it for anything ...

Room is already booked ...

Unless I'm mistaken, room rates are $21 a night.......how can you beat that?
I think you can also get 2 beds in the room with that rate.....

I went to my first Reno open in June of 1998. There were over 250 players there. I drew Kim Davenport in my first match on the featured table. I had hardly ever played in any tournaments and to say I was nervous would be a big understatement. It's a rack your own tournament so I pretty much sat there and watched Kim play. I went to the same tournament in December of that year and there were over 325 players. I drew Ralph Souquet in the second round. On the feature table. The tournament is dying a slow death. The turnouts are getting smaller and smaller. Last year the turnout was 165. It used to run Wed. through Sun. then they increased it by a day and raised the entry from $100. My brother and I got first pick in the Calcutta for $300! Yes, we did pick Shane and he did win. The professional turnout has gone way down too. Efren, Bustamante, Earl and a whole bunch of others used to go to the June and Dec. events. Starting on Thursday night, there might be 5 matches going on at the same time that were great matches and you were lucky to get a good seat. Now the stands are not even half full on Friday. I wish they would go back to a Wed. start and a $100 entry fee. This used to be a great tournament.

Well if the tournaments dies it's the pool players fault

This tournament has a very low entry fee and consistently payouts out all the added money. Why support this tournament when the players can go to one that has a history of not paying on time or at all. Man pool players get what they deserve sometimes. This tourney should have 500 players.

Oh I know the promoter should give it some big name so players show up then the promoter can stiff the players and get away with it. Why don't he name it oh I got- " The World Championship of Brokesters". That would be a sure way to get all the players show.

little bit sad

It's not anywhere near what it used to be, Jim.....I mean, most of the great Eastern Pros used to come and play ....I can't remember them all, but somewhere back there, they stopped coming.....I tried asking Scott Smith once why that was, but he just shrugged his shoulders and said something about maybe too much hassle, and not enough money.....I guess the point was after 1st and 2nd place money, there really isn't much more to make up the cost of travel and living expenses.....plus maybe a lot of them had negative experiences down at the craps and blackjack tables..... I too, wish it was like the tournaments of days gone by....As I think of it, I don't think Pat Fleming and Accustats come anymore either, do they?

This tournament was a $300 entry and I believe $20K added back in the late 80's early 90's. It was not missed by any of the top pro's back then. The last time I went was about 4 years ago and it was nothing like the tournament I remembered from its heyday. It was just a few pro's from outside the area, mostly California pro's and shortstops and then quite a few bangers.
It's not just the tournament that I believe is in trouble, I don't expect the Sands Hotel and Casino to be around too much longer. I just heard that Fitzgerald's right up the street is closing its doors this month. Reno is getting killed by the Indian casinos in California these days. It's too bad, I used to enjoy going to Reno from time to time, now everytime I go the place is dead.

I believe this is true.....Reno has changed so much....so many casinos have closed up and been replaced by hock shops and even condominiums.....
I have been getting more offers and discounts from Sands than ever before....who knows how much longer they will last..... and like you, the last time I went there, it was really dead, compared to what it was before as a gambling town......
