Reno Tournament in Progress

I think Orcullo will with that big win over Kim, but I would really love to see Kim make a comeback and win it all. :D

Dennis Orcullo sends Davenport to the left side with a very convincing 9-1 win. He will now face Chen in order to earn a rematch with Orcullo.

Who do you think will emerge the champ?
Orcullo. Anyone watch any of his matches? Be nice to get a description. Thanks a lot.

I think Chen will be a better match for Orcullo. He beat 2 other Filipinos, Gandy Valle and Warren Kiamco to reach this point.

Who is better Orcullo or Manalo?

Yeah, I have never seen Orcullo play any match. For those who have seen both him and Manalo, who do you think is the better player?

I think they're both world-class players, but I may have to give the edge to Manalo. He just seems to stay in line a little bit better.

They're both very different styles. Orcullo has a very typical Filipino stroke and stance, while Manalo's fundamentals are a bit more traditional (though still very very fluid).

It's almost like trying to pick between Busta and Efren really. Both can run out a set, so it's hard to pick a favorite. They can both make any shot from anywhere on the table, so trying to pick the better player might just depend on who's getting the better rolls that day.

It's hard to pick favorites, but I'm pulling for Kim Davenport!

It's very inspirational to see a player return to the pool scene after a hiatus AND hitting 'em as strong as Kim is today. Go get 'em, Kim!

BTW, GulfportDoc, I like your new avatar! :)

Yeah, it's good to see Kim come back strong. Age will start to be a factor from here on out... Thanks for the compliment re the avatar. It's a recent snapshot. Decided to use it in stead of that old thing on 1p.o. Of course I'm MUCH better looking in person!:)

Incidently are you and the Quakester going to the BCA Open July 29th in Louisville? You may not be able to take the time off.

Your forum personality is always upbeat and postive, like your avatar, and it will be my pleasure to meet you in person someday on the tournament trail! :)

We will be in Vegas on July 29th at the IPT event. However, I look forward to reading all about it right here on AzBilliards! ;)

I too would like to see Kim ward off the Philipinos to win. You can't discount them or Bill Ganne, though. He must be well over 60 now, but has a fine command of the cueball and great potting skills.

A fine showing from the 2 youngsters, Austin and Michelle. Michelle dominates her regional tour in the Bay area. A widower, her father would take her and I believe her 4 siblings to the poolroom and they couldn't go unless their homework was done. They would play sets to see who had to do the dishes! There is a set of twins and her younger sister Mary plays jam up as well.

I remember when she was in her teens, Michelle roomed with Lisa D'Atri and me. Her father couldn't be there because he had to choose between her pro event and his younger son's Junior World Championships in Europe. She had some pro events already under her belt, so he was torn, but went to her brother's event instead. Lisa and I mothered her to death and had a blast.

She's not afraid to bet it up against the men and has a great future ahead of her in pool.

Her future is becoming a Doctor, which she is studying for in earnest. I am sure that will take priority knowing Michelle. A truly super gal.

Davenport wins 1st set 9-6, but loses 2nd set 9-8! Great job, Kim, you'll get'm next time! I was rooting for ya... :D

Why are the brackets saying none of it??? So, Kim and Orcullo played a true double-elimination finals and Orcullo won, is that it?

In the final match kim won 17 games and Orcullo won only 15 games and won the tournament.

It's great to see Kim back in stroke. He is the epitome of perfect fundamentals and concentration, IMO. I am also glad to see Orcullo making his mark in pro tournaments in the USA. I saw him play at an IPT qualifier, and he makes everything look so simple. Nothing fancy, he just shoots incredibly straight and stays in line.

Hill-Hill Win For Orcollo at Reno Open

Dennis Orcollo proved he can play more than just 8-ball this week with a run through the field of 159 players at the Reno Open.

Orcollo, who also earned wins earlier this year at the US Bar Table 8-Ball Championship and the Hard Times IPT Qualifier, looked unstoppable all week as he scored notable wins over Corey Deuel, Tim Hall and Rich Geiler. Orcollo took the hot-seat on Sunday with a dominating 9-1 win over former Reno Open champion Kim Davenport.

Davenport went to the one loss side where he had to face Texan Jui-Lung Chen. Chen doesn't get out to play in many major events, but he made the most of this one with wins over Victor Ignacio, Chris Bartram, Bobby Hunter, Gandy Valle, Warren Kiamco and Gabe Owen to his credit. The third place finish would have to be enough for Chen though, as Davenport earned a hard fought 9-7 win to set up a rematch with Orcollo in the finals.

Orcollo looked on his way to another dominating win in the finals as he sprinted out to an early 5-1 lead. Davenport then showed that he can still make a ball or two and won six straight games to take the lead 7-5 and then took the match 9-7 to force a second set in the true double elimination finals.

In the second set of the finals, Orcollo got to the hill first at 8-7 but scratched on the break and watched Davenport tie the match at hill-hill with a flawless table run. Davenport broke the final game and made a ball, but had no position on the one ball. Davenport pushed out to a long straight shot on the one and Orcollo took advantage with a slow rolling shot on the one ball followed by a dicey table run to earn the 9-8 victory.

You can view all of the match results with our online brackets and we will have complete results from this event later in the week.

Some of the pros who played in Reno might be in Hardtimes Sacramento for their Annual Summer Jamboree tournament.
