Hi guys I'm getting ready to put a tip on a OB 1 Shaft. The tip was gone when I bought it. My question is theres a black pad on top of the ferrel is this the way they come from the factory. I'm sure it has to do with protecting the ferrel. Another thing my brother told me to be careful sanding the tip down that if I'm not I can take the color off the ferrel.

The pad needs to stay on the ferrule.
The ferrule is made of wood, so yes, you should be careful when shaping the tip.

I have a OB classic that I use sometime and when I was out in Vegas I asked Royce about it at the OB booth and he had said to always keep the pad on with all the OB shafts. I changed my tip , but I have a lathe and been doing machineing work and doing tips for years , just turn it down to where the pad is. So I wouldnt do it if your not a qualified repairman. For the little that it cost I would get it done right,<< ED

I bought 2 OB-2 shafts for my schon. When it came time to replace my tips I contacted Royce here on AZ, he provided me with a step by step procedure for tip replacement. Contact him via PM and you will get information directly from the maker, he also sells those carbon pads should yours be damaged.......Dan

IMHO, leave it to the pro's.

I changed the tip on my OB-2 recently & (accidentally) sanded into the pad a little bit trying to get the last bit of old tip off. Thought "no big deal", put the tip on & it popped off after a few days. Sanded down the pad again (same mistake) and put the tip on. The tip & pad popped off after an hour. Called OB to get a new pad & will have a pro repair my shaft. So much for DIY!

A long time ago, a knucklehead friend of mine suggested that I would get a better hit with the OB shaft if I got rid of the hard, carbon fibre patch.

I took his advice and had a broken wooden ferrule in less than a month.:embarrassed2: With the pad in place (like OB Cues recommends on their website), never had another problem with the ferrule.

You can coat the wooden ferrule with some Super Glue and it will help keep the chalk from embedding itself into the wooden ferrule.

Check the OB web site, it will explain everything! www.obcues.com. The black pad is to protect the wood ferule. You have IMO the best shaft made so just have a tip put on it and you will be happy. It no different than any other items, you just need to know why and how to keep it in top notch condition.

No pad for a month?

Wow Joey, you must have a really soft touch with old whitey. My first tip change without a pad went about three shots and it crumbled like a chocolate chip cookie! I was breaking with it but I soft break anyway but whatever. Royce fixed me up quick with no charge cause he is that way. Even though it was our fault, he stood behind his shaft. I think it's called customer service.
