Replacing the tip of a Predator 314/3 by hand?

I have a Predator 314/3 shaft, and I'd like to replace the tip for a softer one. I did a quick search and there seem to be no professional cue doctors in my immediate area (Manchester, UK) so it looks like I'm going to have to do this myself.

Normally, replacing a tip wouldn't worry me that much. As an ex-snooker player of 20+ years, I have replaced many tips by hand myself. However, the 314 shaft is different in that it has their so-called V-Tek silencer, and this makes me a little more wary, and this will be the first time I have ever replaced a tip on an American pool cue.

Does anyone have any advice as to the best technique/tools to use to replace the tip please? I don't have access to a lathe, so everything will need to be done by hand.

Loctite super control gel super glue .
A 19mm wide or wider wood chisel from you hardware store.
You need to take the new wood Chesil and sharpen it razor sharp..

Normally I wick all my layered tips with a thin CA bought from a hobby shop store .
Then use the Loctite super glue

You need to make sure there is a carbon pad under the tip...

I use rubber bands to hold the tip while the glue dries .

Glue the tip on using rubber bands , put a slip knot in the rubber band around the shaft and stretch the rubber band up and over the tip.
And do this with the shaft upside down so you don't drip glue down the sides of the ferrule .

You cannot have glue on the side of the ferrule ,

For any reason you think you are going to sand on the side of your ferrule, STOP THERE and send the shaft to some one with a lathe ...

Trimming the tip.
With the shaft straight up and down with the tip side down on top of a wooden block use the wood Chesil and trim the tip flush with the ferrule.

Many thanks for the info and advice. I appreciate it.

Hi Mike, just make sure you do not cut away that silencer thingy and your good to go.

WOW...that was some insightful advice Kim...Any other Gems of wisdom?
Most people that have no clue usually just don't say anything, take a hint....

This, I believe if the silencer is removed or even modified within a certain amount it may void Predator's warranty on the shaft.

It does. It is on the Pred website somewhere. Same as ferrule diameter.

When you change the tip, you don't have to take all the tip off.
Usually the bottom layer is soaked in glue of some kind, and often the bond to the ferrule/tip pad is still good. You will know if it is not as a little chunck will peel off or come off close to the ferrule/tip pad. In those cases taking off the very minimum is required. In that case, it is best to have someone with a lathe to do the job for you.
Many people can install a tip without a lathe and the result is just as good as a lathe install. Just depends on the skills the person has to do the job.

Relating to this issue, the pad on BK2 always seemed to be peeling off. Anyone experienced this issue before? If so, what may be the proper way to make sure the pad is flat prior to tip installation?

Thanks.
