My memory is not what it used to be, but wasn't Kirby the player that hosted a lot of celebrity pool tournaments? If so, I think he deserves mention in this forum.

Too bad to hear about Kirby.

Any other sporting or other celebrities people know of that host a lot of charity pool tournaments?

This is sad....although I only just barely met him (several of us WPBA players played in one of the his celebrity/charity tournaments (1993?) at the Chicago Classic that year), Kirby seemed very warm and certainly loved pool. He definitely raised the "pool consciousness" of the general public. He will be missed.

RIP, Kirby, and thanks for the good times.

Kirby was a very popular player and will be missed by many people. The Minnesota Twins are the major league ball team closest to Saskatoon, we have many fans here and the Twins have good coverage here ... I agree 100% Jeff, thanks for the great memories Kirby.

NJ,
Jeanette Lee has organized and hosted fairly regular charity benefit tournaments here in Indy. The 2 main charities that have been the recipients are the National Scoliosis Foundation (for which she is the national spokesperson) and the Asian-American Alliance.

Celebrities that have participated in her events are Reggie Miller, Edgerrin James, Darnell Hillman, Rick Smits and of course, my partner from last year, Boomer the Pacer mascot (who insisted on wearing full regalia during the match, including the fuzzy hands and big head - at first he wouldn't even talk because of the "mascot code of silence", but relented when it became apparent he didn't even know the rules). Monica Webb, Helena Thornfeldt, Jeff Beckley, and Nesli O'Hare also participated on several occasions.

I met Kirby thur his close friend Paul Gerni, world trick shot artist, in the mid 90's when they were doing the Childrens Hearlink in the Mall of Americas. He saw Paul's case and the rest is history....traded case for a signed bat.

My biggest memory of Kirby is in 1991 when he hit the game winning home run against Charlie Leibrandt (bad decison by Bobby Cox) in game 6 of the world series. Growing up right outside of Atlanta and always being a braves fan ( even back when they stunk really bad) and then finally getting to the World Series....and losing. After that year, I always seemed to notice Kirby's name coming up when I watched the highlights on ESPN and I realized that he was one of the most dedicated players to his team and the sport that you will ever see. I think that is one of the biggest compliments that you can ever give an athlete....to see his dedication. That goes for any sport. RIP, KP.

That is really sad, Kirby was a class act and was well respected throughout the baseball community, he will be dearly missed:(

There weren't too many players like Kirby Puckett. His stats say it all. Too bad his career was cut short by the injury to his eye. Way too young to die too. R.I.P. Kirby.

May all of us who compete at pool do so with the passion and grace of a Kirby Puckett.

Kirby loved to compete, and we all felt it when we watched him. Whether you play pool or baseball, play with joy and you're more likely to capture the imagination and support of the fans.

He used to have a celebrity 8-ball tourney in Minn. every year back in the 90's for charity. I believe he quit that after his health and eyesight began failing

IIRC
